| | Armour Memorial Home for Aged Couples - KC, MO < on 11/17/2013 6:13 PM >
| | | This place is a classic, I'm sure it's popped up on uer.ca before, and I've seen some flickr accounts with interior pics. I was there a few months ago and was about to step inside when a dude stepped out- it looked like he'd been living there, so I didn't crash his pad. This is an amazing place though, in a great historic area. The greenish building pictured is the former Armour Memorial Home for Aged Couples, also called simply the "Armour Home". It was built in 1904, right next to the Gillis Orphans' Home (still standing and in use as a church). The Armour Home was purchased by Western College (Western Seminary college) in 1926 and converted to a school building. The orphanage and residents of the home for the aged moved to a new campus at 81st and Wornall. I'm not sure when the Western College abandoned the building on Tracy Ave. but it looks like it's been left to squatters for awhile. My favorite parts are the wooden columns on the porches and the big old steel letters that spell out "Western Seminary". If you're interested in it, I recommend reading the section about it in the book, "The Waldo Story: The Home for Friendly Merchants". 1
