Am I alone in missing it? I grew up in the 80's when it was still going along. I miss it. Honestly. Life was so much more fun when you didn't know what was going on with the world frankly. And all that government basic built shit lying around now for us to explore was well manned and ready to destroy the world at a moments notice.

Anyone got some good cold war gold to post here? So I can reminisce?

I've been in some cold war bunkers, mostly German WW2 ones which were reused in the cold war. Or do you seek stories?

Friend of mine was in Germany right after the wall fell and got me a spray-painted piece of it. Unfortunately, I was living with the wrong woman at the time and in the split she kept it. Probably didn't even know what it was and threw it away.

You betcha

i lived 50 miles from a primary target- Plattsburgh AFB/380th Bomb Wing.
I can do without the cold war to be honest.

there were missile silos within 25 miles of my house... they're still there in Lewis NY and Willsboro NY (they ringed the AFB in Plattsburgh)

this is a link to the silo closest to my home. It's been partially restored by an Australian who visits the area twice a year: http://www.siloboy.com/

I grew up in Tucson AZ, which was also a known target of the Soviet's ICBMs. We had the "aircraft graveyard" at Davis Monthan as well as a ring of our own ICBMS surrounding the city. Many of the buildings downtown had civil defense signs pointing the way to the basement. Every Saturday at noon the civil defense sirens could be heard across the city as they were tested.

Yes, we even practiced hiding under our desks in case there was a nuclear blast. Now all I can think of is that they would find us like the bodies at Pompeii, only with the meaningless gesture of covering our heads with our hands.

The space race was always discussed in terms of "beating the Russians", although we often trailed them in the early years. Many of the electronics we take for granted today wouldn't be possible without the massive military spending on miniaturization of electronics. Many of the technologies developed during those years because the building blocks of our modern electronics. One of the most obvious remnants that we still use today is the GPS network.

We watched live TV as the throngs scaled the Berlin Wall and started tearing it apart with hammers. We knew that our world had changed forever, we just couldn't envision how much. We hoped that our children wouldn't live under the same dark cloud that we did. Little did we realize that there are always clouds on the horizon.

Ramblings of an old woman...

i think that the two most significant events of the world during my lifespan would have to be the fall of the Berlin Wall (signifying the death knell of the Cold War and Iron Curtain) and the advent of the Internet (which came from technology created for DARPA).

Everything after that is fast forward.

Wouldn't the end of the war be good for UE because all those bunkers and things were active when the "threat" was still there?

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,
"Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/

Well, not too many good memories for me really. I remember being about 12 years old when the TV movie "The Day After" first aired. I don't think I slept for a week afterwards, it scared the shit out of me.

Also, at that same time my dad was in the army. I remember him being gone on maneuvers (REFORGER maybe?) and being so worried about him, would he come back safely to us? All that sort of thing.

It was not the best time to grow up in my opinion, living with the constant threat of nuclear war. The world has changed since then and maybe not for the better despite the fact that we won the Cold War...
