Company president and chief executive Mario Longhi made the comments regarding the former Stelco operations during a conference call with analysts on Tuesday afternoon. Watch for updates" Yay industrial decay! Boo more jobs gone.

....which is a drop in the bucket compared to 1980 when there were 25,000 employees. Amazing to note how much the numbers have changed at Stelco (and Dofasco too....) http://epe.lac-bac...ial/stelcomain.htm

| | | After reading up a bit more, it won't be a full closure...the coking operation will still be up and running so not likely.

| | | The fire department doubles as security there. If you haven't gotten in yet nothing will change for now. Coke is still being made along with rolling of steel. However I may try and pull strings now for pictures as it shouldn't be that much of a secret to as how steel is made. The blast furnace was one area I didn't get to see but I have seen almost everything else.

| | | http://www.thespec...aking-in-hamilton/ "Forty-seven non-union jobs will be lost, but company spokesperson Courtney Boone said it would try to move staff into other positions. That leaves approximately 600 members of United Steelworkers Local 1005 and about 228 salaried positions at the Hamilton plant." Not 2200 people affected but it's still a crappy blow to the steel town.

| | | The 2,200 figure is a little high , although, after people retiring I'd still put it at least 1,000. See, a lot of us with crappy numbers are on call back but seeing as steel making will not resume we're out of jobs. Not to mention other businesses and sub contractors that serviced the 3 departments that are now being closed. It's a much bigger number if you factor in those thoughts.
