Into the hills

Recently took a trip with several other photogs into the Appalachians and found some interesting finds in between our main destinations -

GENERAL STORE Abandoned store, looked like it had been shut down since the 90s. Plenty of artifacts here.

1. Not a typical shot for me, thought there was something very beautiful about the plants and the guardian angel.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6. I'm always surprised to see how many preserves are left behind in places like this.

7.

RANCHER HOUSE Not sure how old this house is, but there's no bathroom. I'm guessing there was once an outhouse that has since been torn down.

8.

9. Can't beat the wallpaper in some of these rooms.

10. Bricked-up fireplace starting to crumble away.

11.

BURNED HOUSE We almost didn't stop here, I'm not sure why, but we turned back to check it out. This was my favorite house of the trip. Second story was a bit shaky to navigate but I was able to shoot the bed upstairs.

12. Seriously we were dumbasses for passing it the first time around.

13.

14.

15. Inside it's as if the people disappeared the second the fire struck. Calendars indicate the house burned down in 2004.

16.

17. I've recently entered a ton of houses with clothes still in them. They always still look new.

18.

19. Lastly, second story of a house that was so hoarded and trashed it was impossible to get anything but this shot upstairs.

Great shots. Might have to rethink my rule of not exploring houses.

Love #8 and #13. Gorgeous houses. #13 looks like it had a 2nd floor balcony at one time.

I've heard the Appalachians are a wealth of good spots to check out. You found a couple gems. Nicely done.

I was talking with a friend of mine that does some disaster photography for FEMA and she was telling me there are areas in the Appalachians that they won't send women alone and they definitely won't send black folk at all. So if you decide to explore this area, take a few buddies with ya just to be on the safe side.

Piggybacking on ISO640's post, I'm black and because a large portion of my photography interest involves the rural condition, have been in parts of the country you wouldn't believe.

The first trip I took through West Virginia in 2009 was solo and I never strayed far from the road; saw quite my share of FEMA trailers but never had any issues. This second one were in more isolated areas and I was with two other photographers; I'd never make the trip otherwise.

My advice is in rural areas - no matter WHO you are or WHERE you are is to be careful. Having shot in high-crime urban areas and the desolate banjo-plucking country, the way I like to explain it is this - in urban areas they'll ask you a question then shoot so you at least have opportunities to escape safely; in the country, they'll shoot THEN ask.

If you venture upon land solo without permission, know the risk you're taking; these people take property and 2nd amendment rights seriously, and for good reason. They can't just call the police and they'll show up, it's too late. So historically they have to fend for themselves.

There's been cases where a white female photog will ask to tag along with me and I tell them straight up we're going to have to take a white dude with us. It's one thing for me to go solo, or them to go solo, but the visual of us traveling together in some of these places is risky. Going with a herd is much MUCH safer.

If you go solo, do the best you can and find the property owner is; knock and get permission; even if it's from the people who live next door. The great majority of the time I haven't met resistance to shooting photos. In fact, most have opened up to me - often out of innocent curiosity of seeing a black photographer in the middle of nowhere.

It also helps to do some planning research and ask friendlier locals the lay of the land. That sort of info helped me steer clear of the KKK while traveling through north Arkansas. It's a backwards world, just be practical about it - live and take photos for another day.

Ugh I HATE that racism is still something to be prepared for and expected around here. Ashamed of the south sometimes...

Ah cool. I'm planning on driving up into the Appalachians this weekend. I'll keep my eyes open.
