Sewer and tunnel maps

Logically speaking, sewer maps of every city exist. The city is planned, so they're out there. Have you ever gotten hold of official maps? If so, how easy was it to get them, if at all?

it varies by municipality....some cities publish them for free online, others will sell you a digital copy, others will let you access physical copies via the public works department while some won't allow anyone but official contractors access to them. And while it might help point you in the right direction, I think having knowledge of an entire system can take a lot of fun out of the process of tracking them down yourself. At the same time having knowledge of pipe diameters and geometry can help you avoid wasting time in shrinking backbreakers, not that that isnt half the fun in draining ;)

I guess I mean storm maps? I'm not entirely sure.

I see what you mean about taking away the fun of walking through a backbreaker for however long to only go back the way you came. It's not exactly an endearing memory for me, but I see what you're getting at lol.

The fun is knowing that there's something worth going all the way down a backbreaker for, not crawling for blocks and then finding out there's nothing there!

Yes, sewer maps are great resources, especially of you can get historical and modern and compare. The treasure lies in the differences between the two.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

i directly to the city's department of water and they let me photocopy the original plans for numerous pipes in the system.

it all really depends on the city and if they are going to be nice and give you a copy or not.

In very old cites like where I live (Quebec, Canada). While the city expanded, smaller towns around merged or where annexed, so many changes happened that they don't even have a complete map of the sewer system.

I found a ton of large sewer maps for the City of Atlanta and suburbs... dating back about 30 or 40 years.

I didn't count... but I'd estimate 100's... all laid flat in wide / thin height drawers.

Each about 4' x 3' architectural originals)...
as well a map / list of sites that needed asbestos abatement.

Found them this odd desk like structure... later found out, that's what they actually store maps and large documents in.

I left everything where I found it.

the only reason I say storm not sewer is that my job sometimes requires me to work in the sewer system and I would seriously question why anyone would want to walk around in a sewer tunnel or sewer system without being properly protected and outfitted with a respirator. I've gotten very sick from making sewer repairs and not wearing my respirator.

The City of Denver's maps are all computerized and publicly accessible if you know where to look.

A good location for non-public maps are the geo sciences and engineering departments of local universities. they often have very detailed maps online for their students, so all you need is someone in the university or an unsupervised network cable...

....because serious shit sewers are serious fun??

I'm not denying the risks of serious injury, illness or death....but those are all things that could happen at street level too. It's all about knowing the risks and taking appropriate measures to mitigate them when possible.

I won't deny that they make for great pictures and stories....but coming home sick multiple times from working down in it all day....I just dont find the appeal in going down in them to take pics....storm water and storm tunnels yes, but raw sewage tunnels....no thanks.

you're right in that I could see the novelty wearing off real quickly if forced to actually work down there all day, for more than one day. I don't think that would be much fun at all, and wouldn't be surprised to hear of getting sick afterwards. I've been lucky, but there are plenty of others around here who've gotten ill from venturing into sanitary sewers.
