| | | Good lord, until today, the skies here have been dark and overcast for what seems like weeks now. And I don't know about you, but that's not my favorite weather to be shooting in. When I'm crawling around an abandoned building, I like to have a little sunlight coming in to light up my shots, you know? But I figured it was the perfect weather to go re-shoot this abandoned gym. In open sun, all the holes in the roof make for one big contrasty mess, but on a day like this, without all the bright sunlight, you can actually see what's going on in this place. Anyway... as near as I can tell, this school opened in the '50s and was closed by the '60s. I haven't ever seen the inside of the classroom building, just the gymnasium. 1.

| | | I feel your pain. We had that type of weather recently, where it was dark and rained nonstop for about 4 days.
Nice shots.

| | | I went to school with a gym just like this, almost exactly the same design. Its still in use today. Another gym was just demolished in town that was in use and built in the depression. https://www.facebo...opreservationtrust

| | | Man, that's such a shame about that '30s-era WPA gym being torn down. Some people just don't get it... Here's another one that looks similar to the one I posted above. Probably from about the same '50s-'60s time period too.

| | | There's a nearly identical gym in a town near where I live...very small town that in the '50s or '60s consolidated its school with neighboring districts. The school was eventually torn down but the gym is still standing. It's owned by the city and has been a maintenance nightmare, but fortunately there's enough residents in town who've demanded it be kept open to the public. If not for the fact that it has a fairly new roof, it may have been left to rot. The town's softball association uses the gym during the winter for practice and takes care of maintenance while the city pays utilities. Seems to be a good agreement for now.
