Having a land mobile radio & microwave site there used by San Mateo County SO was their mostly bogus excuse to suggest its a high-security site & deny entry to Nike history buffs. It is about the only San Francisco Protection Zone Nike site which hasn't been well-documented.
Also, Nike Trivia -- the 3+ mile distance (I measured it on GPS once) between SF-59C & SF-59L might be close to a record as the longest separation between an IFC. & it's Launch Battery.
More trivia: Several SF Defense Area Nike sites -- 51, 59, 87, 88, 89 were built on or very near the grounds of former Harbor (Coast) Defenses of San Francisco coastal artillery sites, including some coast defense artillery sites that date back to well before WWI! Through modern history, sea-power was the strategic military threat to the United States -- battleships, aircraft carriers, etc. but the big lesson learned towards the end of WWII was that strategic air power (long-range bombers) was the new strategic military threat to the USA. So the big old coast defense artillery sites like Battery Davis at Ft Funston (SF-59A & L), Battery Townsley at Ft Cronkhite (SF-87A/L & SF-88C) amongst others were closed, some of the Anti-Aircraft Artillery gun sites stayed in-service, and then eventually were phased-out as the Nike-Ajax sites became operational.
So if you've done your research & know what to look for, some of the Area Area Nike sites have a very broad range of 19th & 20th century military history. Angel Island is one of the best examples -- Civil War up to Nike & technically, you could say 21st Century defense as some of the old SF-91L grounds (power house area) is now owned by the Dept of Homeland Security (USCG).

I'm guessing the distance for SF-59 has to do with the proximity to SF. Probably not enough space for anything closer.
The Bay Area does indeed seem to have a large array of fortifications. As far as I can tell, there is the old Spanish/Mexican Presidio, Benecia's pre-Civil War command post, Forts Point and Reynolds (and the basement of Alcatraz) from the Civil War, the Eastern Battery, Ft Baker and the Presidio Main Post for the Post-Civil War, a whole bunch of Endicotts, WWI and WWII batteries scattered around the Headlands, Ocean Beach Presidio and Angel Island, and finally Ft Mason, Treasure Island, Mare Island, Hunter's Point, Alameda Point, the old Kaiser Shipyards, the Presidio, Moffett Field, Concord, and Hamilton for the interwar years to the end of the Cold War. Right now I'm trying to see if there is a way of reaching the AFB on Mt Um before the area is demolished.

If you look at Google sat view you can see a minorly overgrown route from Sierra Azul open space to the north that would be fairly casual except for ticks. I'd like to check out the SF-59C from the outside maybe hike down and around it, but for me to get inside legally, well, I'd have to work at it from a more official angle. I need to reshoot SF-59L/A since I didn't get too many good shots last time I was down there.

SixbyFire, have you had a lot of luck getting permission from places? I've generally found it better to apologize than get permission, but then I've never tried radio sites and there seem to be quite a few horror stories around regarding them.

That's just one way too. The climb is about 2500' vertical. Even with a mountain bike it's about 2-2.5 hours, but the downhill is fast, whereas hiking the downhill is the same as the uphill. They use radar to enforce speed on the Kennedy Rd side, but likely not on the Hicks Rd. side, which is prettier anyway.

For me there is no way I'd try to get into this place without permission. I know a lot of people that know a lot of people, and I'm working that angle now actually. I'm one step closer than I was a week ago. At least I've got more first hand intel on the site from someone who has been in there in their official capacity, however, they themselves don't have "routine" access.

In a way I'm glad; I thought SF-51C was fairly isolated, but it was badly vandalized nonetheless. SF-88C to be in much better condition.
The NPS seem to be applying paint jobs all over the headlands.
