Planning a trip from Milwaukee to Shawano.

So my brother and I, possibly another friend, are planning a day trip to Shawano to visit a certain site before the snow falls.

Does anyone know of anything interesting we might be able to hit on the way, without too lengthy a detour? We are taking country roads as much as we can, rather than the expressway...too many things missed when you're shooting by at 75mph.

What site could you possibly be driving all the way from Milwaukee to Shawano for? I'd be interested in hearing about this, in private message. If it's the big house it's so not worth it...

If you don't take 43 to 29 the 2 hour trip from Milwaukee to Shawano and back alone is no doubt going to take you all day long. However, there is some shit to see on the way. There is a large school, a hospital, a motel(although, on the highway), a thousand houses and maybe a factory or two. When are you making your trip?

forget regret.

If you're going where I think you're going in the Shawano area let me give you guys a tip.

I went there Sunday and some people were parked right in front. When I was driving in a Sheriff was ahead of me on the road. I circled back a few times over the next 40 minutes and watched the sheriff hand out citations to three people. There was another truck parked close by that received a John Doe summons for trespassing.

Park far away and take the extra 10-15 minutes time to hike in.

Are we talking about same place? About 10-15 miles west of Shawano?

Maribel Caves County Park is pretty rad. There's an old hotel shell (known as "Hotel Hell") next to it, with some history behind it, including gangsters, bootlegging and multiple fires. There're a few caves/caverns which are crawl-able in the park.

I just did some research on "Hotel Hell" and apparently in August there was a wind storm and...the vast majority came crashing down. Now all that stands is a broken wall and a half.

That's right. I actually heard about that but completely forgot. The "tornado" passed through there. It was nothing but a shell anyways. I visited when it was still all intact, but it was too dark, and i didn't have a flashlight. (This was before i knew that "urban exploring" was a thing. Hah.)

It's too bad though...I mean, it's still worth a stop, but not in the same way as before.

Previously, though the architecture varies, it totally reminded me of the castle from the last act of The Ninth Gate. 1.

Really cool topic, I'm really trying to get out to Milwaukee with some friends and get a chance to see the city in a different light. I know the place Ken is talking about but I don't believe that is the one that he is referring to, I could be mistaken. Either way I wish you the best and can't wait to hear more about it.

I'm sure he'll probably Geotag it, if he hasn't done so already.

Geocaching is fun and all, but i would never tag an abandonment. Seems like a bad idea.

Geocaching is awesome. I'm going after 150+ geocaches this weekend. But exploring is awesomer. Although it depends on the location, and it depends on the cache...all hobbies can be awesome if you find the right place.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping.
