| | | The "National Trust" has published a handy list of interesting things to UE before they are lost... http://www.nationaltrust.org/11Most/2004/index.html

| | | These lists put out by historic preservation-type organizations have always kind of bugged me. Although they are well intentioned (and useful for UE folks), I often wonder about the selection process. For example, why is the Seabiscut ranch on the National Trust list? I may be biased, but I have a hard time thinking of the Seabiscut ranch as being on the same level historically and architectually as, say, Cook County Hospital in Chicago. -N

True enough--preservation groups don't seem to have a lot of political clout. They're good at putting out lists. Ninj recently commented on the National Trust list in his Usufruct bloggy thing: http://www.infiltration.org/usufruct -N [last edit 7/12/2004 11:55 PM by NV - edited 1 times]

<reuben> somebody keeps jiggling the doorknob on my front door, then running away <reuben> i don't know if i should call the police, or hook up some electricity to the doorknob <cristobal> why don't you put ice on the stairs <cristobal> and heat up the door knob <cristobal> and swing paint buckets down from your two story foyer <cristobal> then a few years later, fade from the public eye..... |

The National Trust is a tricky thing to understand. If it wasn't 1:30 I would attempt to explain it in detail. There are no levels of what is more important then the next. This list is 11 of thosands, and is done every year.
This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit. |

| | | sounds like in montreal when the city declares a place historic its like a death sentence, the owner cuts the heat and electricity and lets it crumble to build another parking lot

I'm sure there is some sort of process to the National Trust list, I just meant that when I look at "endangered buildings" lists in general I often wonder what the criteria for "historic" or "architectually signifigant" is. Bethlehem Steel I understand, and if that get's ripped down I will be pissed, but I'm still scratching by head over the inclusion of the Seabiscut ranch. I'm sure that all of us know of at least one abandoned building that is really unique, yet the building in question will never be given a second look by any sort of historic architecture group. -N
