Stelco Tower (pics)

I missed the Stelco Tower during this years Doors Open, and after seeing pictures from the top, I decided that I was going to go check it out.

After realizing that the elevators were not going to get us up, and that the only obvious stairwell was directly behind the security guard, we had to get creative with our entry.

[19th floor]

The building was clearly designed with physical security in mind. Every one of the elevators [to the top] requiring keycard authentication and visible by the security guard, and every single stairwell door 'alarmed' with in-frame reed sensors or switches. Keycard slots on walls throughout the building indicate

[20th floor]

The top floor of the building had the bright tarps and warning signs usually expected when asbestos is being removed, with all but one window covered in plastic. Pressure washers, tools, fans and ladders were scattered around.

All of the non-concrete walls, and most of the ceiling tiles have been removed from many of the upper levels of the building.

On the very top of the building, normally hidden under a drop ceiling, five bright yellow beams, have countless names and short messages on them serving to preserve some of the history of the building. Second to the view of the water, this is definitely one of the most interesting features of the building.

Definitely worth the trip.

There are actually two stairwells in the center of the building, between the lower-level elevators and the upper-level elevators. One leads outside, the other to the loading bay. Every single door in the stairwells is 'alarmed'. The floor numbers written on the doors, written on the elevators and actual distance from the ground are ALL DIFFERENT.

Best time to visit: Anytime the mall is open.
Security: Intelligarde, Cameras, Access-controlled elevators, Partially active security system.
Hazards: Asbestos, water fountains with nasty tasting water.

I love that the signature beams are still exposed and not covered in fire-proofing. Great view from up top.
