If rust buckets are your thing then by all means, hit it. You surely aren't the first to be there & won't be the last. I was in S.I a few weeks ago & passed it up in favor of a few other spots on stank island. There are much more interesting locations nearby that you should consider putting on your trip list.

As others have said though, make sure your vaccinations are up to date, it is new york & it's never been the cleanest water. If you have a kayak, canoe or inflatable, there is a quarantine island in the narrows which might be of interest
