When you say steam tunnels, do you mean the ones that are connected to the subway systems? Sometimes I see 40-50 feet deep pits under grates on the sidewalk that lead somewhere unknown.

This thread is so much win... we've got not one, but two cops... er, I mean, "explorers" who don't know what a steam tunnel is

Think about it you guys. Steam rollers are very slow. Do you want them clogging up the highways when they are driving between construction projects?

No. You don't. To keep them out of everyone's way they build tunnels to move the steam rollers from one job to the next. problem solved.

A man in California once led cops on a low-speed chase. He climbed up on a steam roller and "took off" on it, driving down the street, very slowly.

He said he was tired of construction workers making him wait to get to places and he wanted to get them back.

The cops finally managed to clamber aboard and stop him.

So whatever happened to the guy going into "college steam tunnels"? Has anyone heard back?

Yeah, well if you see a professor down there smoking pot either pretend you don't see him or greet him by a completely different name and walk away quickly. Plausible deniability is a wonderful thing.

Wait - that was back in '67. . .

FYI:
The U of MN steam tunnel pipes were reinsulated last summer (2012). The fist phase was an asbestos tear off. The pipes are sprayed with water to keep the fibers from going airborne but by now what ever remains is dried out and can be kicked up.
The pipes were reinsulated with Pyrogel.
http://www.aerogel.../Pyrogel_XT_DS.pdf
There was only one guy too tough/stupid not to were a mask during the install and he swears up and down that, that stuff is going to kill him. The Pyrogel MSDS says otherwise.
I'm sure the pipes were coated with PVC but the fibers are still floating around so wear a mask.

Not trying to sound like your mommy.
BTW, Im new here, I hope that kind of info is helpful.

Everyone knows the steam tunnels are treasure troves, they're just trying to keep you from going down there and finding all of their hoarded DSLR's and embroidered UER polo's. And all those cameras and motion sensors? Yeah those are the explorers', don't touch the damn merch.

This'd be a cool place to drink.

You don't even have to be IN the steam tunnels to be hassled by UMPD, I've been stopped at least 3 times while just walking around, and asked if I'm "part of Action Squad". The best way to remain inconspicuous on campus is to steal bikes or break into dorms, the cops spend so much time watching for explorers that actual crime is easy!

I hear they also like to trump up charges. "Pushed a rusty gate open? That's $5,000 worth of vandalism"
