It was used by 2 Group and 100 Group until in 1944 it was closed to be upgraded to Very Heavy Bomber status. In 1949 USAF had B29s stationed here. During the Cold War of the 50/60s Sculthorpe was a major nuclear bomber base. It was from here that operation Jiu Jitsu was mounted. Since the Americans left the base has been used by various units whilst there own airfields have undergone upgrade.
