| | | Did anyone make out out today? I went with a friend and was pretty impressed. Aside from an hour long line, it was a great tour. Although they go out of their way to show that they treat inmates fairly and with respect - they make no mistake that they're in there serving time. I have to wonder what the motivation was behind opening the doors though.

| | | I've been as well and even though the place impressed me, it was also very disturbing. The whole idea of the place is high efficiency and low cost, trying to cut corners as far as possible and limit inmate movement to the 40 person unit they are assigned to. Three things I found the most worrisome: 1* inmates participate in their own court proceedings by video link in a small cubicle, kind of like a telephone cell. 2* the personal contact to family etc is limited to video link, no physical proximity is possible. Family still needs to go to prison for the video link 3* all windows frosted, yard is actually a part of the unit and all concrete, allowing fresh air only through grates, no natural plants/look outside I find point 1 to be the worst of them all, not being physically present in ones own court proceedings sounds like a borderline interpretation of the right to a fair trial. And this for a 75% remand population, that is people that are not convicted yet. Even worse "Almost half of all adult stays in remand end with no further supervision", that is they were not convicted of a crime. http://www.statcan...icle/11440-eng.htm
All in all a brutal place, I'm glad I had the chance to see this.

| | | I think I would have preferred a tour of all the older buildings & the old brick works before they were demolished rather than this new pre-fab place.
