Road trip! Halifax and Quebec City.

Hello UER members. I recently drove to Halifax and Quebec City on the way back.
Did 1 building in each city.

Funny story! In Halifax the law finally caught up to my exploring. When I arrived in Halifax the first thing on my mind was to get a night photo of the city. After I showed my Toronto photographs to a friend and he insisted that he attend my next climb.

So this being the first time bringing a friend along with absolutely no climbing experience and a minor fear of heights. Quick pause! To those people that are shaking their heads and saying to themselves that I am a stupid person for agreeing to bring my friend along are wrong! I have multiple safety credentials, first aid, fall arrest, and tower crane rescue, I have also lent my only harness and rigging gear to my friend. I didn't mention my thoughts to anyone one that night, but what good am I if I am dead...
So I figured he needed practice climbing and have a clear understanding of the safety dangers and rules, especially before climbing the risky downtown location that is directly adjacent to a police station.

I found a nice and quiet location with an estimated 10-13 floor concrete building. The only thing that was bothering me was that in Halifax all the tower crane were on the outside of the building and not like back home where they are on the inside of the building. Visibility from the ground was extremely high. Being all excited and wanting to hurry so we could change locations, We decided to started the ascend. At first my friend was slow and nervous, but as I talked to him and explained certain things to him he eased up and got over his fears.
We finally made it to the top of the crane and started enjoying the night sky and half-decent view.

I started my photographing and was busy framing my shots. Out of nowhere I was all of the sudden a deer in someones spotlight and instantly froze and told my friend to do the same, the light went out shortly. As we started to question whether the person has seen us or not the light came on again and just as quickly went out. I decided it was a nosy/concerned neighbour. Those were the facts and it was time to pack up and go.

So we hurried to pack up and started descending down the crane. About halfway through the decent I looked down to the streets and saw that the 5-0 have arrived. My heart sunk and was literally trapped with nowhere to go but down and right into the hands of the police, to their advantage they did not scramble and make a scene.
As we got closer to our doom, one of the officer asked "how did you get in?" and replied with "we just hopped the fence". At that moment I thought that I might be able to run from this. I mentioned it to my friend and he pleaded not to.

After what seemed to be an eternity we finally made it to the ground and the officers asked us to hop the fence and come to them. As I followed their orders I mentioned to them that my friend and I are good people and mean no harm with them luckily reassuring us. Once I climbed over the fence and was in clear view of the officers, they noticed my bag and tripod sticking out and asked "were you taking pictures?" and I replied with "that's exactly what we were doing". At this moment my mind was having difficulties understanding why I am not laying on the ground with my wrist bound together.

At this point I realize that these officers are not here to ruin our night so I started explaining that photography is a great hobby of mine and I am always looking and willing to take that different photo. They seemed to understand and respect that. Now we just needed the site supervisor to show up and explain that we were taking photos and not stealing anything. Just hoping he would understand and let this whole mess soon come to an end. While we waited, the officers started to explained that what we had done was extremely dangerous and suggested that we could ask for permission and they might condone it. In my mind I thought myself doubting that they would let us do that, but even so I would decline. They wouldn't know, but trying to be oblivious is half the fun.

Once the site supervisor showed up they had a conversation amongst themselves, which afterward they invited my friend and I. I introduce myself and apologized for having him woken up at this time of night. He just explained to me that he was grateful that we were not there stealing and damaging equipment. At this point all I can think to myself is that momentarily all this will all be over soon and shortly heard the phrase I was eager for "Have a nice night boys, and stay off the cranes!". Quickly without showing signs of rushing or emotion we left for the car and all this was over.

The end.

Well I hope you enjoyed my story. If you did not read all of it or any of it I understand.

And now the photos.
