| | | according to a recent post on the Iron Miners forum, it appears the wonderfully photogenic and well preserved St. Nick breaker is in the process of being demolished, at least partially

| | | It all sucks. http://www.ironmin...c.php?f=19&t=22514 There are still a few breakers hiding in the mountains in Appalachia though.

| | | I was there one month ago and I waited for two workers to clear out, as they looked like they were surveying and assessing the breaker. They moved around and into the breaker for about an hour before I got in.

| | | This is how the site looked on Saturday -
They have demolished the building at the southernmost part of the site which was connected to the main body of the breaker by external walkways. Word on that mining forum is they're taking down only part of the building but you have to wonder why they would got to the trouble of transporting all their equipment out there to demolish only 5 percent of the place...

| | | ^That sucks. Even if they don't demo the whole thing, there was a lot of cool stuff on that ground level that's now cleared out.

| | | Lame they just started tearing down some historic mansion property near my house. Really bums me out because it was one of the cooler places to go in my town. Started with kids trashing it and now it's almost all gone (maybe even completely now after today.)

Just speculating here, but it could be just to be able to get the equipment to the south side of the building where the RR tracks used to be so it's easier for a drag line or whatever to get to the man made mountain the machines are eating. It also looked like some of the equipment there was for destroying random pieces of concrete still buried in the ground. Clearing the way so there's less crap to run into. When I was there recently it looks like nothing in the building had been touched or cleared out at all... except for the southern most section where the coal was inspected that had been loaded into the hopper cars.
