| | It's gone now: Demolished, collapsed, and destroyed post-explore < on 8/11/2013 4:33 PM >
| | | I've barely started exploring, but 3 of the locations I've visited have since been destroyed. As of a few days ago, my very first location collapsed. I guess it's a good thing a snake (or skunk) scared me off the main building, as I was considering attempting to go up to the second floor of the building that collapsed. I caught one just before it got demolished. I couldn't go in due to the neighbors keeping an eye on me, but I was able to get some nice ones of the exterior. One I explored before, and after the collapse. I got some nice ones before. A storm took the place down before my scheduled repeat visit. (I had been waiting for the seasons to change, as my original explore was during Winter.) So, how about you guys? Have you explored places before their destruction?

| | | So many filthy shitholes I've loved and shat in have been ground into dust. The list is long and makes me sad. I had some of my most epic exploits in buildings that no longer exist.

| | | There are a couple handfuls of buildings that I've explored before that are now demolished. I'm not upset about it because they were trashed and uninteresting and needed to go.

| | | Yep, my list only totals one since I don't get out a lot but the build I had my first explore of got torn down early this year. I never got explore it properly because a group of vandals where through a few days before I explored it and knocked out the stairs. It's a shame it was quite the building and I only got to see 2 of the 5 or 6 floors. At least it's on the UE DB.

| | | I wish they would demo a building that, after 10 years, still hasn't been finished around my area I visited a quarry once that had equipment all over. I came back a year later with a buddy and the property had been cleared and all equipment had been placed with easy access on this tiny plot of land, making it easier to explore it all LOL. Another spot was in the midst of state owned? tree farm land. The house was covered in trees. Came back a year later and the whole land had been cleared, making for better lighting while shooting the house again. That's about the extent of "here today, gone tomorrow" sites ...

| | | Not to get all serious about this stuff, but it seems to me that a lot of the great locations were demolished about a year before we started exploring. That's given me a little perspective when going on explores that it's a lot about documenting what used to be, wait a year and it may be gone; or security may be ramped up and pending demolition.

| | | Demolition makes me incredibly sad. I have never explored a place that was then demolished by humans, but there were definitely places that I used to like that got destroyed by hurricane Sandy. The threat of demolition is why I always get myself to go into an abandonment, even if I am freaked out. It's almost a motivating factor, like I need to get in here at some point, and it won't be here much longer. What I really truly hate though is when a place gets bought up by someone and they hire a lot of security.

Thanks, but I just took the photo; the image was clearly visible on the wall. Someone had cut a bunch of different sized holes in a window board, covering up the ones that didn't work, until they apparently got the right size. It projected an inverted image of the view outside onto the wall, sort of like a pinhole camera. There's a term for it, but I forget what it is. It seemed to work best on overcast days with snow on the ground. This was in the ward wing of the Kirkbride at Worcester State Hospital.

| | | Camera Obscura, is it? I made a pinhole camera in 8th grade for my art class. I don't have any of the photos I took from it but I was amazed it actually worked.

| | | Bonus points if you're exploring it WHILE they are actively demolishing it. We were on the top deck of the Elk Creek breaker as they started tearing into it with 2 dozers ... Great times.

| | | My interest in Urban/Rural exploring is all about the question that CooperArt asks, "So, how about you guys? Have you explored places before their destruction?". The main idea for me is to get there and photograph before the location is demo'd. Atleast that way I have obtained a bit of history before it is erased. I hate the old, "next time I drive this way I have to bring my camera to get some pics of that place" but then finding that the next time I'm out that way the place has already been demo'd.
