I moved to Virginia for a seasonal job about 3 months ago and have been scoping things out in hopes of exploring. Since I'm unaccustomed to the area, I've been hesitant about exploring alone. A few friends from Florida were up recently, so I had the chance to get out and look around.

Since I'm originally from Florida, all the red bricks in these Northern States make me swoon.
I didn't get inside (this time) and there was a truck at the front entrance, so I didn't get to see the notoriously beautiful steps leading to the front doors.
There's always next time.

Enjoy and bring a flashlight with you. There apparently is a way to get in, but I have not been in the area to explore now that it is opened.

Down the road there is another building on hospital grounds that is being used for storage. I was able to see beds and other medical equipment through the windows. Unfortunately it was boarded up on the ground level floors both times I checked. There are also asbestos warnings all over it. :/

The room on the top floor with all the crazy writing on the wall is pretty rad.
Otherwise, the place is just meh.
Bring a good mask and BRIGHT lights.
Prob want a flash too ... unless you want to spend all day light painting.
Good luck.

What part of VA are you in?

Then how did you see stuff inside?

Thank you for the heads up on lighting and bringing a mask!

I'm living in Shenandoah National Park around Luray, VA. When I 'go into town', I usually end up in Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, or Fairfax.

The building is embanked on a hill. At the front street level you can see through windows, but it slopes down away from the road. On the rear lower end there are boards covering the doors and windows.

If I could have photographed in there I would definitely share the photos.

This is the front. There was frequent traffic on the road. Those windows in front are also sealed shut. :/

Pictures to come.

That sounds really cool. I'll have to find that next.

Have you been inside the two smaller buildings behind the asylum?
Just wondering if they're worthwhile.

Gorgeous building, but it is a shame that the interior is so far gone. Still, I know I always enjoyed locations a bit more when I had to work to get inside them. Any large amounts of paperwork get left behind? Any old steam tunnels or connections to other buildings?

It really is beautiful. Its architecture and history are my favorite things about it.

Most of the papers I saw were magazines, brochures, or blank unused rolls of printer paper. I didn't spend very much time looking at it, though. There was a lot of debris on the ground.

I'm not sure about steam tunnels or connections to other buildings. That would be very cool.

Very cool. I love magazines- the older the better. I was actually asking more along the lines of if there was leftover personal information. I have a problem with that... I'm working on it.
