Rural exploration: It's the journey

These are rural finds I'd stumbled through NC, SC, TN, KY, and WV over the past few decade. With exception of Yates Mill, I never intended to see any of these places, but come across them all while driving to a client's site or some other destination. They say it's the journey, right?

1. One of my first digital photos, ever. This was in 2003 in Wilson, NC. It's since been torn down for a housing community.

2. And this is my most recent find, an abandoned house located in the Triangle area of NC.

8. An abandoned house that wasn't nearly as interesting as its views outside.

11. This is an interesting one. If you've ever been down Hwy 1 on the way to Virginia you've passed this house in Kitrell NC. The first time I came across it, nobody was there, a couple years later, I went to take photos and somebody was actually -living- in the house, a few years later after that it was surrounded by yellow tape, and today it's gone.

14. Located on the side of an old gas station. There's been an attempt to restore this building and they did a butcher job on the "P" part of Pepsi.

15.

16. It rarely snows down here, so whenever we have inclement weather I visit some of my favorite local places with my camera.

19. Ran into this house in Snow Hill. It was unoccupied, but owners happened to be on site because they were looking to renovate it. They let me take shots there.

26. This is the shortest day of shooting ever. Two minutes. I had discovered this abandoned house way out in the country. At the time I owned an SLR with pop-up flash. Apparently my metering was too dark, the pop-up flash went off and *FLASH!* That's when I was attacked by an entire nest of wasps inside the house. I dropped my camera equipment and ran out of the house yelling and tearing my shirt off as wasps stung me left and right. I was stung 11 times. I GPSed the nearest hospital - 45 minutes away. Thankfully it was nothing serious as I only dealt with bouts of nausea. I went home safely.

Apparently the house is still there but ain't no way I'm ever entering that place again.

27.

28. South Carolina. This is across the street from a car graveyard of several hundred vehicles that I'll eventually post in the near future.

29. Rural Tennessee had a lot of scenes like this.

30.

31. This was near a hotel I was staying during my first business trip to Kentucky.

32. In the mining country of West Virginia. It was an overcast day when I ran into this trailer and car, so lighting was perfect for this shot.

33.

As many of you know, Yates Mill in Raleigh NC is a currently an expansive park with a restored mill, walking trails, and a visitors' center. When I moved to North Carolina in 1999, it was just the mill standing there as they were still fundraising and doing early development. These are some shots I took in those early days. Never got inside the mill itself as it was locked.

In 2006, Yates Mill County Park opened up to the public with fully restored mill. I've only returned to the site once since then - December 31, 2009. I woke early morning to discover and looming intense, heavy fog. I had to see Yates. The mill was closed for the holidays. I fondly remembered the "back way" into the site and was relieved to see it was still there so I didn't have to hop a fence.

39.

Since then, storms damaged the old tile roofing and has been since replaced with new shake roofing. The new look of the roof appears out of place, though I'm sure it'll change over time as it weathers. Unless it snows, I don't have any real intent of returning to Yates.

#38 and #39 are awesome! The rest of the shots show your progression as a photographer as well. Nice stuff.

PressingLeap, I really like your image and the other ones in your set, particularly of the panorama. I'm glad your trip was less eventful than mine in '09! It looks like the floor has deteriorated a bit since then.

Thank you. You're right, the floor was mostly caved in...I didn't venture inside b/c I already had my fun with wasps earlier in the day, just admired it from the yard and peeked in the windows/door.

Agreed—these are really beautiful images. There's something very special about rural southern vernacular architecture...
