Wayside Signals?

I've been trying to learn Wayside signals, the ones used by the TTC, and all the sites i've been to are not helpful.

Does anyone know how they work? Or any good sites? (w/ pics)

On a regular (aboveground) rail line, the signals are based on the old semaphore system and usually have at least a red and green light (in the US anyway), and sometimes a yellow one as well. Red means there's a train in the next section (a certain distance of track), yellow means there's a train two sections away, and green means that the next two sections are clear.

When I rode the TTC during OPEX I noticed that there only seemed to be two lights on the wayside signals, green and amber/red. A good way to learn the sequence if you can't find more info would be to find a signal visible from a station, and watch what colors it shows as trains pass (maybe time the trains as well to estimate how long it takes for one to appear once a red light shows).

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

I've been trying to learn Wayside signals, the ones used by the TTC.

Do you mean the subway train signals (Younge-University and Bloor-Danforth)
or the trolley car subway (Waterfront and Spadina)? I don't think Scarboro
has many, and I haven't been in Shephard yet. Railroad signals can be even
more complicated.

Try the antique dealer in Toronto's Union Station for a TTC rule book. Make
sure that signal rules and illustrations are not in a separate book.

at the end of that pdf is a link to a site that is now at

http://nxsys.nycsubway.org/

this is the site for the training software for TTC and NYC subways apparently.

did anyone read that whole pdf? it mentions at the end that the whole rail system is controlled by relays (still?!) - i guess this is why that pdf is so complicated. most of that stuff about control distance, etc. seems to be common sense...

could anyone offer any explanations of the signals described in there, but in real ENGLISH?!

finally, do you think the ttc would give a tour of it's control room? it says at the end of the pdf it would for operators, but i'm not an operator...

At the bottom of the .pdf it gives the name and phone number of someone to contact if you're interested in more information. I'm not sure if they're allowing the public in to see the new control centre, you could phone the Head Office and ask. If not, contact 'Doors Open Toronto' and suggest it as a location for next year and see if they can pull any strings.

Ex passed that one on to me a while ago. I couldn't find it, so I settled on the Transit Toronto one. That's a really great explanation they have of the wayside signals.

Tnx for the complement.

Much of the information there was just re-adapted from the NYCSubway siganls page anyway, with ammendments for TTC-only aspects and other quirks.
