5.11 bags look like single stitch to me, run some weight in a bag and watch it rip apart one time. Also for the price of 5.11 I think it should be built a bit better then it seems to be. Maybe they have up the quality in the last 2 years, but I highly doubt it.

Also just because cops/military use doesn't mean they are great.

Have you ever actually owned a 5.11 product or do you just like to look at what they offer and then give an opinion based on your observation?

I"d honestly go with a CamelBak pack - they have superb fits & (like many others mentioned here) it's top-quality. Gotta have that comfy fit, esp. for any longer hauls. Admittedly, I use mine (MULE) primarily for long hikes or mountain bike rides. Experiences & preferences may vary.

I'll be getting a TriZip when I've got a few extra bucks. Pricey, but worth it, as it will easily out-live me.

For basic exploration in mines and everywhere else I typically use this pack

The Blackhawk STRIKE Hydration pack ($123)

Holds all my necessary gear, and 3 liters of water. I've been using one for the last 4 years. It's been thrown/dragged/worn in over 400 mines, and has yet to get a tear or a hole in it's outer shell. Can't complain about that.

For larger loads, I use the LA Police Gear 3 day backpack ($30)

I have two of these. They hold ALL my gear, for multi-day trips or whatever else comes my way. They also have a built-in hydration pack holder. I can fit several days worth of clothing and all my other gear in it, and it's as rugged as the first pack.

I ordered the RAPDOM Lethal 24 yesterday, should be here mid next week. I will let everyone know how it is. I was looking at the 5.11 packs and they are 600 denier vs the RAPDOM 1000 denier.

I kept reading that as RAPEDOM for some reason.

Good to know, as I'd considered that pack before but was concerned about the quality. (Their pants, specifically, suck.)

Most of my exploring is underground as well, so shit has to put up with a lot of abuse. Maxpud Sitka is what I normally use:

http://www.maxpedi...arslinger-p926.htm

It's not a dedicated camera bag, but it's been working for me for a good five or six years now. (I've had to re-stitch some of the molle, but nothing critical.) It gets a little tight, fully loaded, but I can fit a Mark ii, an extra lens, a few lights, random tools, and a couple beers without much trouble. It's even got a small hydration bladder compartment.

It's good stuff. I really like that I can access all the contents without taking it off, because most drains/sewers just don't have a lot of places where stuff can be set down.

The LA Police 3-day backpack looks really interesting. Can you tell me more about it, Therrin?

I just like them, I'd refer you to the actual page for more info.
There's not really anything I can say that's not written on that page.

From:

LA Police Gear has one of the best deals out right now in the Three Day Backpack! This bag has tons of room for your gear, and is MOLLE compatible in case you need to strap on external pouches. The padded shoulder straps make carrying heavier loads a breeze and the overall design and straps help distribute all of the weight evenly. Made as strong as the name brands, but without the name brand price! LAPG doesn't compromise, and neither should you.

Features
Made from 600 Denier Nylon
Hydration Compatible
Ergonomically designed padded shoulder straps
Dual compression straps
Exterior straps to hold MOLLE compatible gear
Removable 2" waist strap
Main compartment has interior organization system
19" tall X 13" wide X 12" thick at bottom and 9" at the top
2590 cubic inches
Made to carry heavy loads

This bag has received great reviews from customers! This pack is the perfect size and all the features you would want in a basic 3 Day style pack. Similar backpacks can cost anywhere from $100 to $250 dollars. You can't beat our price. This is one of the best value backpacks anywhere. We went factory direct to cut out the expensive middle men who do nothing but jack up the prices. Don't be fooled by the price. The most common customers statement about this backpack is that they are blown away at the quality they get for the price they paid. Give this pack a try and if not happy with it send it back for a refund.

I used to like their pants... I have 12 pairs. Hell, I'm wearing a pair right now!!!

I really liked that they had double layer seat/knees. The problem is that after not too long, the stitching on the double-layered seat starts coming undone. So then, like the one's I'm wearing right now, it's still sewn in the middle at the top, but both sides of the double-seat end up flapping about, like two pockets.

For people who DONT know it's a double-seat, they think the ass of your pants are hanging open. I've had more than one person comment to me that the rear of my pants had come unsewn and was I aware and such. I'm like "yeah it's double layer, thanks though" haha.

I was going to look into having them sewn back up by a tailor, with double stitching.... but it'd probably cost like $10 per pair, and the pants brand new only cost $18.50

Which pants do you recommend (there are so many styles), and why don't you wear them anymore (something better to recommend)?
I ripped the ass out of my favorite cargo pants slipping stupidly on sharp scree near a mine last fall...

Funny you say that because I bought a pair of their pants a month or two ago and so far, I really like them. Of course I don't expect them to last particularly long at their price point but if they last me six months, I'll consider them a good buy.

On the topic of bags, I use a TNF Surge when I actually feel the need to bring one with me exploring. I considered upgrading because I'm a bit of a gear whore but I really don't see the need. Even though I bought it for school over a year ago, I use it for everything and it's stood up to a whole lot of abuse while showing no signs of wear and tear. Also it has lots of pockets inside to keep all of your miscellaneous stuff organized. It's got a pocket that I found perfect for first aid supplies, which surprisingly come in really handy when liquor and urban exploration are combined in large quantities.

As a bonus, the laptop sleeve makes a great hydration pouch holder, nice and separate from the rest of your gear. I'd recommend it.

MY experiences with the LA Police Gear pants have been terrible. I like all the pockets, and such, but the material was too thin and prone to tearing (even the ripstop) and the stitching was awful. I should take a picture sometime of just how much repair stitching I've done.

Granted, they were exploring pants and I got them for something like $10 each (plus shipping) but for me, they just aren't worth it.

I much prefer a $5 pair of jeans from the garbage store.

I in no way, shape or form need a new bag, but that thing is SWEET!.......so, I NEED it. I much prefer a slingbag for the same reason you do.
I REALLY like 511's tactical pant. Well thought out pockets, clips and reinforcement. If you hold out, you can usually find them for $30-something on sale....

I use this Domke bag mostly, its awesome. I can fit my 60'd with a 18-200, and a small prime in it no problem. Plus it has the zipper on the front where I usually jam my wallet, car keys, filters ect.

Then I have this bag for everything else, its not very discreet but iv had it for years and it does the trick. Usually for camping or bushwhacking to get to ue spots.

Everything Burton makes is gold. Between the 2 of us, my wife and I have at least 6 different Burton bags. They're top notch.

The great thing about a SUPER-obvious bag like that is the complete innocence you can exude as you explain, "Well gosh, officer, I didn't think anyone would mind if we went in there!"
