Baltimore Pure Rye

A few weeks ago I visited an abandoned rye distillery in Dundalk, Maryland that has been out of use since 1989. The facility was first built following the end of prohibition in the 30s and changed hands a few times during it's years of operation. Unfortunately, I don't know a ton about liquor or it's production so I can't comment on the places in which the whiskey was made within the buildings, hell I don't even know if they still had the stuff that was needed at the location. There were nine buildings, depending on how you look at it, or 10 if you include the one that has completely burnt to the ground. Unfortunately, during my visit I only got to see three or four of the buildings, but I definitely plan on going back to see more.

The place was super easy to get into and there was never really a threat of trouble: in fact as we were leaving we passed some cops and all they did was wave (though I have heard rumors of the police telling other people to leave when they saw them there), we joked that in the murder capital of the world they had better things to worry about. When you get inside it was really great, with all the buildings, it'd be pretty hard to get bored. I'd plan on going on a day trip if you really want to explore and take pictures of all the facilities.

The entire location is covered in graffiti. Some of the places you could find it were astounding too...

We tried to climb to the top, but none of us had the balls to do it. Maybe one day we'll take some climbing equipment or something. But speaking of graffiti..

Some surfaces were completely covered! There were a lot of tags though that could be found in a lot of places. Nero, Ash, Caspamo.

That's a view of what appeared to be one of the central offices. A door leads to a back room where that appears to be where trucks would come with the raw materials or the finished product. Fun fact: there was also a bathroom.

By far my favorite building... You enter by crossing over some precarious wooden planks that sort of paint a picture of what its like on the inside. Except for a fairly narrow walkway on all six floors, all of the floorboards have collapsed to the ground, quite a sight to see.

And this building appeared to be home to some squatters so watch out... Signs included empty bottles, sleeping arrangements, and even human shit. be careful of the stairs though, very unstable.

And that's it for this set! I'll be sure to post more pictures when I go back if people are interested.

Also, this is my first location post since joining UER, please let me know if I did something wrong.

Yeah he died in the building pictured in the 8th photo. The place is amazing to look at but I wouldn't dare go out on the catwalk. One of the guys that I was with did, but luckily he survived.

surprised it's not more restricted after that incident.

Also heard that a group that went recently had a run in with some huffers/junkies there. They tried to block their exit out of one room, and they had to spray them to get out.

Woah that's really scary considering that at one point we heard voices... That could've been a close call. So more and more this place is shaping up pretty dangerous.

That was only a few weeks ago I believe. And, you did say there were signs people were squatting there. Looks like you may have been lucky.

Jeez, I was supposed to go back soon, but I guess it's time to explore some other spots.

And thanks! That whole area over there near the smoke stack is completely covered in graffiti.

UPDATE:

It caught on fire, again, on Saturday night,

...And I found that out the hard way.

A couple of friends and I had planned a trip up to Cecil County to visit an abandoned boys school, but other plans got in the way and we were forced to re-visit BPR a little earlier than I had anticipated. (Note: none of us had seen the news about the fire).

As we were driving by before we entered, I noticed some smoke rising up but figured it was just a summer heat mirage or something. Once we got in, I told my crew about the guy who died and the junkie incident, and we all picked up bricks in case we had to defend ourselves. As we got closer to the smoke, we could definitely smell it and saw collapsed bricks from where they had fallen after the last fire. We thought we heard noises, which we thought were the junkies currently lighting a fire, so we bolted. THEN we heard sirens, and thought someone called the fire dept. while we were still inside, so we ran even faster! Long story short, we got out and figured we needed to tell someone we thought a fire was starting and when we did the guy told us about Saturday and that it was probably still smoldering.
