| | The Don Jail (Original building pre-restoration) < on 7/23/2013 5:52 PM >
| | | Firstly id like to say this is my first post on here. so be kind, as im aware it may contain some mistakes in form. So i used to be a security guard. A job which may seem mundane and stupid to most was actually great in many ways. First off it afforded me the opportunity to work in some really interesting and abandoned buildings. It also gave me unrestricted access to parts of buildings that the public never gets to. And there is the occasional fight, arrest and foot chase for good measure. Anyway its been years now since i did that work and i have no intention of ever going back, since today i have my own company doing something entirely unrelated. So getting to my point, i took many thousands of pictures as i worked at different sites. sadly a lost memory stick and computer crash resulted in over 90% of my pictures being gone for good. what i do still have is my pictures from the Don Jail, or as it is known to most the Old Don Jail. located here in Toronto, situated on the banks of the Don River about 2 km from the downtown. This Jail was the first large jail constructed in what was at the time called York. (The former name given to what is today Toronto) This prison was constructed at the time on the outskirts of the then booming town of York. It was built to house, reform and intimidate its inmates. It was also the place where the last execution took place in Canada by way of hanging. For those of you who dont believe in ghosts, i dont blame you. I was once one of those people. But i will tell you first hand that this building is scary as hell. There were numerous times I would hear clear foot steps walking the metal catwalks. it was very uncomfortable. Anyway i hope you enjoy the small selection of pics i have here.
So the first pic is of the main entrance, with father time at the top. the second photo and third show the main doors up close, solid wood about 7 feet in hight. and the main prisoner processing area. If you notice the door that is closed behind the big wood door. this is the former entrance to the prison guvnors apartment. the guvnor used to live in the prison in an apartment on the second floor. this continued until a separate house was build on the land close by. in another photo you see the inside of the stairwell leading up to his apartment. which was later turned into more cells. We also see photos of the rotunda and of the massive skylight which used to provide natural lighting into the building. of course at the time of its construction there were no electric lights at the time. the photo of the long corridor shows a small red door off to the left. this is the gallow where executions were done. i show the view looking into the gallow and then inside where the wood crose section used to be attached. you can see the outline of it next to the window. at the back of the jail you can see an outcropping to the left that is where the gallow is located.
