Canadian Light Source

The Canadian Light Source is a synchrotron facility located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (I realize I'm in the Ontario forum). It is, in essence, a particle accelerator that generates high levels of electromagnetic radiation by accelerating electrons in the central booster ring. Once the electrons reach a high level of energy, they are transferred to the outer storage ring where they circulate for hours on end. Beamlines, located tangentially to the storage ring throughout its perimeter, harness the radiation for experimental use by either bending magnets or insertion devices.

We took our team to the synchrotron facility for some X-ray imaging of our hydrogen fuel cells. The place is huge, taking up the size of a football field -- it made for some awesome exploration.

Good stuff! I'm a bit of a science nerd, having studied in physics, so this is total porn for me.

These are very cool Ronnie, thanks for sharing!

I saw that you had posted a sampling of these elsewhere and I wondered if this was an ultra cool infiltration or something work related - either way it's awesome. And you know something is awesome when it brings S'qualie out of hiding

Incredible! Only with the facility was in Ontario so I could take my physics classes on field trips here. MRT shot (pic 12)... now THAT'S an inside peek! I thought it was so amazing when dinosaur skin was being analyzed here. The fish-eye shots were a great choice. Super-effective in this gallery.

I'll try to dig up some more photos from the various experimental hutches, if pic 12 is what you're interested in. The rotating stage is pic 12 is actually designed for imaging large live specimens, e.g. horses, monkeys, etc.

Personally, I liked the wider shots of the synchrotron facility showing the grand scale of the place.

At the beamline I worked at, we actually have a pretty posh lounge with leather sofas and a nice kitchen. Because our beamline will eventually be used to image human patients, the lounge was setup to get the patients nice and relaxed, before they are scheduled to be zapped with a high doses of X-rays.

What an amazing facility, I always wanted to visit it!

Got any photos of TRIUMF or SNOLAB?

Funny you should mention that dammband. If you've ever visiting Texas, I recommend making a detour to check out the abandoned Superconducting Super Collider
