Mud Rd. Farmhouse Gem (Hamilton, Ont)

This old farmhouse on Mud Rd., Hamilton, Ontario, has not been lived in for a few decades. Renos started some years ago but have stopped.

The owner is well into her '80's and is very reluctant to allow people to access the property and photograph the old house. She had allowed a few people to film the property but they ended up throwing a party at the house.

These photos are only a fraction of what I was able to take during my visit there in March 2013.

1. That was a long walk...

The fuck is wrong with people? I don't blame her for her reluctance.

Ya, the owner had been approached several years back by a girl who was a college student (I forget which college she was from) that said she wanted to film/photograph the house as part of a school assignment. Turned out that the folks living on the farm across the street had to call the cops because so many kids had turned up for the 'party assignment.'

Niiiiiice!
Myself and another explorer have been holding on to this place hoping to visit it and post. We pulled up a few weeks ago and made the mistake of asking the owner across the street for permission. He declined, stating that it was in rough shape and he was worried that we would get hurt and sue him.

Looks like another visit is warranted, as your pics clearly show that there is no trouble accessing the interior.

This one makes me sad.. I wish the owner would sell it to someone who would renovate it and restore it to it's natural beauty. Or hire someone to do it if she didn't want to sell. It's gonna probably just get demolished once she passes away sadly.

You may have encountered the husband of the wife that I met when I first went there. They don't own the site (the wife only told me that the woman who does own it is in her 80's and lives nearby - but that they didn't have any ownership) but they keep an eye on it. I only went to the farm across the street because there was no one else nearby and I wanted to atleast let them know that I was going to access and photograph. Plus, I had to park on the shoulder infront of their farm.

The wife was fine with my request, she only asked that I try to stay clear of the bee-hive farm boxes so that I didn't end up as dinner for the bees.

Getting in is a simple as walking through the front door. Once in, there are rooms to the left, to the front, staircase at front door to the 2nd floor, and rooms to the right. The rooms to the right are fairly unstable with separating floor boards, collapsed ceilings, and a number of gaps to get feet caught in.

If I go again I'll be taking on the barn out back - my camera battery died just as I was getting there on this first trip.

Damn, must have just been bad luck encountering the husband. Your visit was earlier in the year too, so you already broke ground asking for permission. Maybe they figured I came after in response to your visit and thought they'd nip the photography thing in the bud before it became a recurring thing.

Ya, it's hard to say what they think. I suppose that the main thing for me was that I didn't ask the wife for permission, but rather asked if she knew who owned the house and if the owner lived nearby (so that I could talk to the actual owner). Other than that, it just came down to me telling her that I was going to access the location only to take photos and that I would be there about a 1/2 hr or so - more so that they didn't randomly see me and decide to call the cops.

But I'm hoping to head there again later this fall. The barn in the back (I didn't get any photos of it because my battery died) is very large and must have lots to photograph.

Wow has this poor house ever gone downhill, I was there quite a long time ago. The windows were 99% intact then, and it seemed someone was using the outbuildings for farming purposes/storage. The front door had only a hook and eye on it that I relatched when I left. I love it's distinctive architecture, at the time I went in it was quite savable although there was evidence of raccoons having been in it.
It has always been "The Beekeepers House" to me...poor old place....
