The fact that most of these are centered makes them not very interesting to look at. The graffiti in #1 and #3 is distracting. I'd have to say #4 is your strongest shot out of the bunch. Even though it's just above the center it has some nice detail and negative space.

What can I say when you have been a photographer your whole life you kind of are trained to center up on most of the times.

I am aware of the third rule, I am also a trained Camera man who has worked a few music videos. I phrased it wrong sorry lol. I do weddings, head shots and pet pics for side cash. In general they (the paying clients) want their pics neat clean and centered so they can frame em and hang em. I do see the other posters point, I was simply saying out of habit I shoot with center in mind. I am not saying he was wrong.

Oh and just as a conversation starter, the rule of the third is more of a strong theory that has been debated by many.A decent amount of Ansel Adams work is centered and he is considered by many a genius, just saying.

You're not likely to get much useful criticism when you start out by arguing with what is offered.

Not arguing i agreed with first poster. Simply argued that the rule of third is not law

#1 I would have cropped the top out of at one of the straight lines or done some spot healing on some of that graffiti. None of it is very interesting and kind of ruins the photo (I'm guilty of this myself sometimes). Maybe have this photo as-is for showing off where you were or the entire scene, then for "art" crop it big time for a 2nd version.

#4 is cool. I like it.

#7 I would have zoomed way out, and had the doll in a corner, or zoomed out and done a top/bottom crop with the doll to one side. It's "just a doll" in this photo..but zooming out puts it into perspective... "ohhhh it's a lonely abandoned doll!"

The coloring and lighting on everything seems good though.

Very good ideas for the doll. I know some hate tag art in their pics, to be honest I always feel like I am cheating when I do to much photo shop work lol

I wouldn't look at it as "doing photoshop work" its about presenting a scene as a piece of art.

If you are just showing the image off to people of what you did, where you were, etc... that's one thing. I always keep my originals for that. If you're actually trying to be artistic about something and present it in an artful manner, that's completely different.

I take a ton of pics and (lately) am being much more selective in what I use for art purposes. I think "Would someone like to pay me for an 8x10 of this" or "how would this look on my living room wall" or "How would this look in a coffee table book" etc... It really changes your mind as to what is presentable as art and what just looks like point and shoot snapped pics of your trip.

I do like graffiti in some of my photos, but only if its really colorful, bubbly and fun, and adds to the ambiance of the scene. I try to frame my shots up so nothing vulgar is in them (in case the parents are checking them out) and try to keep just lame stuff out of my shots as well. Graffiti art is one thing and, while vandalism, can be art in itself... but tagging and childish chicken scratch painted on something just doesn't belong in my "art" photos if I can help it.

It's just a different mindset to get into depending on why you're taking the photo in the first place.

Hmm. For someone who's been a professional and does two art shows a month. The artistic quality and composition is extremely lacking in all of these.

Also... What an odd concept that if something wasn't centered. A photo isn't frame and hang worthy.

Sorry you didn't care for them (Two of these not only made galleries in Manhattan, ,but also sold), so I guess it is a matter of taste. I respect your opinion though. As far as when you do weddings, Family photos, and such. Most of the time they do like the pics centered (That of course doesn't include action scenes like dancing and such. If you would like to debate the rules of third I am game. But again that is more a theory than rule.

well. It's cool that you're able to show your stuff.

I'd rather not debate the rule of thirds... There's really no debate. It's a tried and tested composition technique that works a lot. And like any composition. Really depends on the shot.

Also. I'm getting married soon. And I know I don't want a bunch of dull center driven shots. That's also why I'm having a hard time finding a photographer that does something unique. And not all this standard cheesy stuff you see forbwedding photography.

Anyway. I don't mean to hate. There's just a lot of great photographers on here. Some of who have commented on here.

I know I've come a long way in taking photos do to listening to some of the advice given.

Agreed, and if my clients wanted diff I would be happy to do so. I give what people want when they pay lol. I also agree the Rule of thirds is a tried and true method, I just dont find it the only way. I find the Golden Ratio rule just as effective, and yes there are great shooters here and I always welcome the advice.
