Animal Encounters?

I had my first one while I was exploring a three-story barnhouse. I had been there before, and was figuring I was going to try the second level. I caught some sort of hissing, and decided something had made its home there, and didn't want me there, so I backed out, took what pictures I could from that angle, and high-tailed it outta there.

What animal encounters have you had, and how have you dealt with them?

Dogs. It's hard to tell mongrels from guard dogs sometimes so I'm not sure which they were. But their bark was worse than their bite.

It didn't occur to me it could have been a cat. I figured it was a raccoon. Those things are VICIOUS. And around here, ubiquitous.

And sometimes, HUGE.

Wasps and bees more often then not. Once, an angry pigeon that went for my face. Hobos.

Didn't see this guy until he started moving. Fortunately he wasn't interested in us and just slithered away.

[edit] Sorry that the photo isn't currently showing up in TinyPic. I will upload it to my own server later this evening. [/edit]

I had a barn swallow pop out of a corner. It dive-bombed me and one of its babies pooped on me. It was pretty nasty but its funny now.

I've only encountered pigeons. This building was covered in shit, but dead silent. Then I turn a corner and 20 of them freak out and break through windows to fly outside. Pretty ridiculous. I'm just happy I haven't encountered anything worse than a gaggle of pigeons.

Arctic foxes and reindeers, lately. No need to deal with them - they ran away - but I had a rifle in case I met something a bit bigger and meaner...

Two memorable encounters:

1. Third floor with a wide-angle composed shot, when I heard footsteps. The footsteps were towards the subject window and getting louder ... and louder ... they were *just* outside the third floor window (wtf?), when lo ... a turkey vulture on the ledge tromped into view.

2. At a prison with two others. We'd been keeping a cursory eye on police training units outside while were were busy inside. We left via a second story window and a well-placed tree into the semi-courtyard below, then noted a trainer and dog some few dozen yards away. Naturally we ducked and waited. Made another cautious attempt when the dog ran down the field away from us and made a looping turn towards us. Well, I was spotted by said dog who made a beeline towards me. This was about to go downhill. Nowhere to run or hide, I stood frozen awaiting my fate, which came in the form of the dog running up to me, licking my hand (I had proffered it and uttered "hey doggie") and he ran off with nary a bark. We left unscathed.

I was at an old tenant house by railroad tracks. It was right in front of a community of trailers. As I'm walking towards the back of the house this pit bull starts charging at me. I grab my pepper spray, look her in the eye and yell STOP. Surprisingly, she listened. She hunkered away. Later I was talking to the breeder guy in one of the trailers and he informs me she is his most vicious dog.

I've also been scared to death by pigeons of all creatures and once came up on a cute baby deer. Hummingbirds like to hover in my face unexpectedly while I scream like a child. I still cannot believe I haven't been stung repeatedly by large groups of wasps. Be careful out there everybody!

Raccoon, mice and rats, that is about it. Still took a bear aware course, just to be safe.

That's a nice group of bats, Therrin.

I find far too many rattlesnakes while exploring. Often times I'll hear the rattle before I spot the snake.

Here's my story of running into a deer, that was not allowing me access to a 3rd house in that area.

One more try on the diamond back... Didn't see him till he started moving. Lucky for us he wasn't interested and just slithered away.

And as Therrin said, bats...lots of bats. Usually scare the crap out of me because they come flying out of the darkness as we trudge down tunnels.

And turtles. Not the mutant ninja type though. We had worked our way through a barbed wire barricade blocking the portal only to find it ended 20' back. Disappointing but we did see the elusive desert tortoise. Fines are nasty for messing with them so we left them alone.

I had heard SOOOO MUCH bs about the desert tortoise and never saw one that I was sure it didn't even exist.

Then I realized that things get put on the endangered species list BECAUSE there aren't as many left, and they aren't as prevalent.

I still can't figure out how the kangaroo rat got on there. Those little bastards are EVERYWHERE.

I has snake and owl pictures somewhere.... Other than that just lots of dead animals, and spiders and scorpions and stuff.

I'd go so far as to list encountering other urbexors in the "animal encounters" category.
