Now that's just honest good advice to live by, that and never swing at a piñata that has hornets coming out of it.
Post by Tenebrae Wonder if "Cavity Compound" preceded sewing the anus (to prevent leakage and resultant odor during viewing)? |
You know, I asked myself the same question what the hell is cavity compound used for. So many bottles, cans and chemicals, more questions than answers. There was an entire cabinet filled with cosmetics and makeup. Piles of stuff in the room that I never got to poke at , and those ... other... things. Perhaps Icelandic9flame or dastardlykiss could help explain the mysteries of the profession to us common folk, I bet there's some wonderful stories to share from those who do this for a living. What is the process from collecting a corpse from the hospital or morgue all the way to preparing it for viewing? I will go back. That damn room gave me an ripping headache though.

| | | Cavity compound is used in autopsy cases. It is used to preserve the organs in the abdominal cavity as well as the pelvic cavity. Sewing the anus? If you feel that there might be leakage you would simply take your forceps and stuff a bunch of cotton up the anus. If you smelled any stinging odors, that is formaldehyde. From the place of death to the funeral home, I have embalmed cold as two weeks chilled and an hour dead. Still warm.you have nothing to worry about if it was formaldehyde you were smelling. With no vents running you only have to worry about cancer.

| | | Thanks everyone, glad people enjoyed the set, it was a fun shoot that day. It seems that the funeral company never actually went out of business, it just picked up and moved across town leaving all this stuff in a state of decaying storage. I need to return and shoot here again ASAP. We got some disturbing news recently. It seems places like this just sit and rot for decades and than SMASH, only to get demolished for no obvious reason. Will get back soon.

| | | Posted by Once-ler Thanks for the comments everyone. I cant take any credit for finding this location however, it was passed on to me by a good friend. And yes, it is absolutely full of trinkets. I would have poked around much longer in the embalming room but I hate to think about what spilled chemicals and crud I was breathing and kneeling in while setting up those shots. I may have to go back though, lots of stuff in drawers and laying about room I never got to see.

my thoughts exactly. the bottles, contents (that they still have contents!), great condition, etc. are a treat to see. props!

| | | Oh, the memories and missed chances. I drove past this place again at the end of last week. It was crawling with workers. Ugh. I'm feeling a candlelight vigil coming on.
