| | | Posted by tiffers I like it! ...what was this...?
|
It's in Bowmanville Ontario... It was a boys school and then in 1941 it was converted into a German POW camp. A few top German u-boat commanders were held there. There were ~880 pow's held there throughout the war. There was a few escape attempts and a 3-day battle with the guards. After the war it was used for a school again until 2008... A developer owns it now and they offered it back to the town as a historic site but I don't think the town has the funds. It's in tough shape now, theres 15ish buildings left. I believe it's the last nazi pow camp left in the world.

| | | Thanks a lot everyone!! This was actually my first shoot with an SLR. These were all taken with a Nikon D5100 with just the kit 18-55mm lens. These were taken in april, since then I've picked up a 55-300, 35mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.8. These were all NEF RAW's that i played with in photoshop. I know very little in photoshop so i'm still learning lots. Most of these I slightly upped the contrast and played around with the highlights/shadows. For #1 I just turned the cyan and blues down to make the clouds stand out more. The framing in 6 bugs me, there was 4 people just hanging around to the right of the mess hall so I tried to block them out.

| | | Beautiful photos! The site just recently got approved for a National Historic Site designation. Wonder if Kaitlyn Holmes will give it up to the town now.

Yeah I know, but I've noticed higher cop presence at the place since it got the designation. Either way Kaitlyn Homes has offered it to the town.

| | | I have seen kids parked on the property so they can play paintball, do the cops drive on or just park and walk in?

| | | I haven't seen cops there since acouple years ago when they were doing k-9 training in haus 4. I'll have to keep my eye out. The place is beyond saving, I wonder what they'll do with it as a historic place.
