It was twenty years ago today...

Here's a little bit of historic UE. I shot these slides around 1993 in an old steam locomotive repair shop built in the 1890s. We were there for a job and had free reign to go into any of the many buildings there.

1.
This is the back shop, where steam engines were taken for repairs. The building still stands but has been completely renovated and turned into event space. When we were there, almost all the windows were gone, and hawks flew through the upper part of the ceiling, hunting smaller birds.

The rubble in the foreground is actually a pile of wooden bricks that once lined the floor. Cranes in the ceiling would lift parts of the locomotives to the level of the second floor, where they would be repaired by workmen leaning through the openings on the second floor balcony (viewable over on the left). If a tool were to be dropped, there was much less chance that it would break when landing on wooden bricks instead of a concrete floor.

2.
This is the power plant that was out behind the back shop. There were lots of signs there warning of asbestos, lead paint, AND a PCB spill.

So why didn't I shoot more? Well, I did, but it's all pretty awful. I probably shot these with a Pentax K1000 and the crappy 50mm lens that came with the camera. That, and operator error, hopefully explains why these shots are so lousy and out of focus. The other shots I have are even worse, so they're definitely NOT getting posted.

No matter how well the shots were or not (and the ones you posted were kickass), just having the experience to see it alone is worth it. Love the trains.

Thanks, y'all. Appreciate it.

Here's one more shot from there that I was reminded of by the discussion in another thread about a theater with a doorway marked "Colored Entrance." The bathrooms in the back shop were elevated above the main floor, and there were stairs leading up to them. As you can see on the wall just above the hand railing, this one was labeled "Colored."

There were other separate bathrooms in the complex that were labeled "White" and "Colored" as well, and I know that at least one of the "Colored" signs is now on display there as a reminder of the bad old days of segregation.

Awesome photos! I know this place, as I grew up one town over. I always wanted to go inside when I was a kid(around the time you took these photos). Great stuff.

Thanks, homereight. I was hoping someone would come along who recognized the place. I haven't been there in about ten years. I guess I need to go back and see what it looks like now.

Nope, not in the database. Not really an exploration site anymore, although it's still a pretty awesome place to see. It's now the North Carolina Transportation Museum.

I was going to say, that it looked an awful lot like the Spencer Shops (which I last visited when I was 8, in 1987).
