abandoned neighborhood

I got a tip about an entire abandoned neighborhood in the metro area a few weeks ago. Since he mentioned it, it because somewhat of an obsession. I decided to check out it on Saturday with a friend. Many of the houses were empty and very similar to each other. They have been completely cleaned out of personal items (furniture, clothes, photographs, etc.).

So...

There are approximately 50 buildings scattered throughout the neighborhood. Many you can't see because the map is cropped, and trees are blocking the view from above. The red dots are the places visited so far.

This was a pretty typical layout for the houses, tucked away for easy exploring without much worry for any possible security.

A view from the house above. The water tower was tempting, but we didn't push our luck on this (first) trip.

This house was across the street. Bathtub with a basement view.

All the houses we encountered were two-stories. Usually the stairs seemed safe.

Some where a bit worse than others, but still doable.

About half of the buildings we saw looked a bit like this, but usually just the porches. This one is in the process of being demolished.

One of the very few things left behind in any house.

Typical-looking bathroom for the neighborhood.

Not sure what was in the water at this tub...

One of the peelier kitchens.

Most of the houses had fireplaces.

We spent about 3 or 4 hours there, and it was well worth the trip. It's nice knowing there is still a lot more to explore. The entire time we were there, I saw zero graffiti anywhere. It was a nice change. There is still an old pool, graveyard, and probably 40 more buildings to check out.

Weird, any reason as to why the entire place was abandoned? Makes me feel like there would be some type of chemical or hazardous waste that made people leave.

It was military housing for an ammunition plant. When the plant closed down, the military moved elsewhere and there was no use for the place, I suppose.

Yes, you SHOULD have pushed your luck and scaled the water tower. The view is quite breathtaking. Nicely done!

Actually, what would camping there be like? Is there any security or is it patrolled? Do people go out there much?

TMI?...

I plan on checking out the whole area in the near future. There are people and farms a few miles away, and I believe the land is part of the state park (although restricted due to safety concerns). There was also some demolition that just seemed to be beginning on the place at the far end of the road. Not sure how quick they're actually moving on that.

Security was my only real concern in preparing for this trip. I've read online of people being kicked out and security coming by. Perhaps so. We happened to go on a day where the whole area was having a fireworks event, so security in the area was probably much more focused on that. Eschaton may know more. People go there every now and then, but probably those who once lived there. I literally saw no graffiti ANYWHERE while I was there, and it's been vacant since the late 70's.

I've got a friend in his 60's who used to visit this place often. He had at least 4 or 5 friends who lived in the neighborhood. Everything was very well-kept, all the houses were white with green roofs and awnings. They had people who kept the grounds up and do the laundry. There was a reservoir they swam in.

Way cool. I hope to see pics from your return visit. If I were closer, I would probably try to convince you all that exploring and camping out there would be a good idea. hahaha

It would be an awesome place to camp, although I did come across coyotes the first time I scouted out the area. But they just ran away.
