A friend of mine found the Blue Ridge Tunnel while on Wikipedia. He asked if I wanted to take a drive to check it out. I said, "why not?"

It was actually pretty neat. These are pictures of the eastern opening. We ran out of sunlight to see the other opening, but there are a number of abandoned houses in the area. I may just go back some time.

...and this is me on the still active CSX railroad line that is adjacent to the old tunnel.

The tunnel has a pair of concrete walls in it, from a failed natural-gas storage project. Each wall has a 24" pipe, 16' long that has to be crawled through. Lotsa fun.

Wow! I had no idea that there was that storage area in the tunnel. It was completely flooded when we went, so we did not venture far in. I still want to see the other tunnel entrance. I'll have to catch it next time.
