Good headlamp?

I'd want to buy a headlamp, but I don't know what will be good one? Could you recommend me a good headlamp and tell me why is it good?

I like my Zebralight HL50, but it might drive you nuts with it's low-range beam. Compare it to the Fenix HL20 for a throw vs flood lamp. What do you use a headlamp for? The Zebralight is great for drains where I don't need it to see far. I tend to pair a floody headlamp with a throwy hand light. Gives good options for many spaces.

Edit: HL50w, $70 retail and I can just see in the dark without thinking about light. Throwy headlamps are trouble in confined spaces but great on night hikes.

Andy,

It's pretty much impossible to recommend a headlamp without knowing how you want to use it and the approximate budget you have in mind. A headlamp that you might use for a quick look around a dark building is completely different from one you would use if you plan to spend 10 hours underground in a cave. In the first instance, most any light will do the job. In the second, your life depends on the quality of the headlamp so your selection process is very different.

A few considerations as you look for your light:

Spot or flood beam
Type of battery
Required run time
Reliability
Cost

If you are interested in knowing more about headlamps, this is one of the best resources you can find. http://www.candlep...ay.php?6-Headlamps

i'm interested in a headlamp too, i have some ask about it, do you know if there is some flashlight which can be used as flashlight and headlight, but easy so handle and light as well.
it's for a lot of situation always in the bag as normal flashlight, for everything like walking at night in forest or find my lost keys on the floor , but i could use it as headlamp when i need to explore house, and open space or confined, something really versatile !

ce n'est pas parce qu'ils sont beaucoup a avoir tord qu'ils ont raison !

Thank you for your reply.
The budget is not more than $110.
I saw some threads about headlamp at candelpowerforum and I'm interested in Wizard Pro http://www.armytek...-wizard-xm-l2.html from Armytek. It's about $100. Easy operation with side switch. Most of all I'm interested in TIR optics. I think it will be something new in the world of headlamps
Armytek site says that Wizard is out of stock now. I saw at cpf discussion that it will be available soon, in the middle of May. I don't remember exactly.

TIR allows extra control over spot/spill ratio. But I don't like throwy headlamps unless ink outside.

I need a headlamp for everything I want to do any things such as walking at night with my lovely dog or repairing my car with free hands. I like outdoor activities: fishing and camping. I think that the headlamp will be good choice. And I would like to purchase a reliable headlamp and light spot should cover a wide area.

If I was buying a headlamp for those uses, with your budget, I would get the Zebralight H51F, along with some Eneloop AA's and a smart charger. Or the Zebralight H600F and some AW-brand batteries and a decent charger, if you really want to go the 18650 route and don't mind the larger size (I have the H600F but it stays on my caving helmet - heck of a nice headlamp btw).

The Armytek may be the greatest headlamp ever, but it doesn't matter because nobody can buy one yet. And I would be very hesitant to buy a product before it's been out a while and all the bugs have been worked out.

If you want an all-around headlamp with both spot and flood, you might want to consider a headlamp with multiple LEDs. You can select spot or flood depending on what you are doing.

Before stepping up to a custom built headlamp, I used a Princeton Tech Apex Pro with selectable spot and flood. It's a nice light but having a separated headlamp and battery pack is not for everyone. Mine was mounted on a helmet so it worked great.

As Tick pointed out, the Zebra lights have a good selection of lights and a very loyal customer base. I haven't bought one yet, but it's on my to-do list. Some folks swear by cheap lights, but have to buy quality since I go underground with mine. Zebras aren't cheap, but you are making an investment in long lasting quality.

On the other hand, you can buy a couple of inexpensive lights with different features to see what works best for you, then look into a higher quality light that has the features you like.

I use the fenix hl30 and love it. It's got a 200 lumen max setting which is adequate but I also pair it with a flashlight that has a max of 850 lumens. It's very rare that I use either on those settings but its nice to have the option.

http://www.amazon...._i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this headlamp is perfect for caves and drains. however you should use discretion when using it in a building, because it is extremely bright. Super good price too. And, it's rechargeable!

Yeah, the life sucks on those things, that's why i usually carry a spare, so i can use that for easy places, then use the Geizland for photography/video purposes, or when really I need to see.

A friend of mine bought one to play with and see how well it works. (He builds his own lights.) I was impressed with it, especially at that price point! It draws quite a bit of power out of the batters so I would keep a couple of sets of batteries in my backpack. We wear helmets underground so having the battery pack on the back helps balance out the weight of the lamp. I can imagine it wouldn't be that comfortable on your head. Also, haven't heard enough about them to really know about their durability. I have the same basic light on my bicycle.
