Hey all, I am new to this board, so generally saying hello. I have a few questions as well.

I am a US citizen backpacking around Canada. How careful should I be when exploring? Should it be better to just not explore at all? (IE, I don't want to get deported.)

Also, how open are the meetups to new people? It would be interesting to meet fellow UER's, and anyone who is interested in exploring/showing around a yankee, I'll buy you a pint or whatever. I have seen a few posts about meetups but not sure how open they are.

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong place or already covered -- feel free to delete or move this post if so. I have to use pay or 15-minute free internet terminals (Yay Toronto Library) and can't browse the site as completely as I would like.

Thanks.

From what I saw during OPEX (as an American), the trespassing laws in Canada are a lot less harsh than in the US. People are also a lot more trusting and relaxed about suspicious individuals, so you're more likely to be seen as just naturally curious for poking around somewhere, and not a criminal or evildoer as you might be seen in the US. Maybe some Canadians can fill you in on the possibility of getting deported, no one I know has been caught so I can't comment on that.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

AFAIK, tresspassing per se is mearly a ticketable office. If you get slapped with some other charges, it would be another matter, of course. For exaple, I was prowling through the Criminal Code of Canada recently, looking into a problem that a friend of mine has gotten himself into, and found this:

177. Every one who, without lawful excuse, the proof of which lies on him, loiters or prowls at night on the property of another person near a dwelling-house situated on that property is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Basicly, this is a "peeping tom" law, but something that you have to be weary of.

Also, if you choose to try to fight said ticket, it could deley your trip.

And about net access, I am not sure about the time limit, but you can also get some free access from the cafe in Honest Eds, at Younge and Dundas.

i know here in new brunswick, the public libraries have free access with a member card, so i mean, you could totally fake an address and get free access like that if its available.

You shake my hand, say “pleased to meet you.” Look me in the eye, I don’t believe you. TUI, as long as I’m still alive. I live despite you. Realize I’m not one of your kind, I’m nothing like you.

Generally places like that are pretty welcoming to travelers too, so long as you're polite. Go in with the attitude "These people will do me a favour and let me use their internet for a bit" instead of "These people had better not restrict my right to use the internet" and you should be fine.

FYI in Toronto you can get an "In-library" access card for free as a visitor. You can't get any books out but you can reserve/login the public computers here. I just discovered this.
