Abandoned Neighborhood in Clt

This was my first mission ever and was chosen because of the proximity to my house and accessibility. From what I've learned while researching the area this used to be an actual neighborhood up until the late 70's. It lies within what’s called “The Airport Noise District” and during the 70’s, most of the residents complained about extraneous noise due to the airport, which explains the name, and by the end of the decade most residents had moved out in a rush. Most of the land that falls within this “district” was acquired by the airport where they’ve built some offices. Today, access to this area has been closed off to any vehicle traffic. Not to mention, the overgrown is crazy.

We went at night so it was hard to see anything as we bushwhacked through the overgrowth. Eventually we found what seems to be the only remaining house from the original neighborhood. The house has completely collapsed on one side due to age and neglect. Eventually we made our way around and found what was probably the original front door and were able to go in. Other things we found were odd pipes and posts and what seems to be a still blooming little garden. But the coolest was this bamboo forest dead smack in the middle of the path. Unfortunately we did not take pictures of the bamboo forest.

The location DB says that the house was impenetrable a few years ago, but we were able to locate it in the middle of the night and make our way in.

We will go back during the day soon to take better pictures.

Sorry about the poor quality of the pics, next time I'm taking my T3i instead of just my phone.

#1

After the found the shadow of the house in the dark, we bushwacked our way through to the side where the found this door. Unfortunately, we couldn't access from here.

#2

We continued our way to the back of the house where we found the main entrance and were able to go in

#3

This led into the living room which was the biggest room in the house and the only one that hadn't collapsed. The floor was giving in some areas. At one point my foot went right through the floor board.

#4

Probably the only item inside the house that was still recognizable.

#5

Back outside, in what we assumed to be the front yard and driveway, we found this wall which divided the yard and the driveway. Over the driveway a carport had completely collapsed.

#6

Littered around the yard we found tons of cool items from someone's previous life. Among them this bike.

#7

And what was left of an old TV set. Other cool things we saw were a basketball backboard crushed by the car port, a broken toilet, an "happy birthday" balloon in the house's main living room, more bicycle parts and bookshelves.

Again, for our first mission, it was great and we had a great time!

It is actually very accessible any time of the day. We're actually planning a second trip during the day in the next couple of weeks.

There are a couple of things around that area: http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=30255

It's a nice hike if you are into that thing and it's not hot and humid.

Yeah, that's the same area. I think the main pic in the DB is the same house I went into before it collapsed.

Congrats on the Charlotte explore. I've been driving around the airport before keeping an eye out for things to shoot, but haven't been too successful. Thanks for sharing.

How ironic. Well, as I said in my original post, I am within walking distance of this neighborhood. Also, according to my research, this neighborhood was originally abandoned because it lies within what’s called “The Airport Noise District” and during the 70’s, most of the residents complained about extraneous noise due to the airport, which explains the name, and by the end of the decade most residents had moved out in a rush. Most of the land that falls within this “district” was acquired by the airport where they’ve built some offices.

Today, some guy came to our doorstep to deliver this flyer.

As you can see, the same exacting is going to happen over the next couple of years due to the expansion of the airport and the new runway scheduled to open sometime in 2015. Apparently, as most of the original owners, we don't have a choice. Our property lies dead smack in the middle of this new Noise Zone, so we will be acquired. Sadly, the house we live in was built in the late 1800 and we're sitting on 17 acres of land which I will hate we're going to lose cause of this.

We're the big box between Douglas and Steeleberry

Anyway, I wonder if in 20 years, other urban explorers will find this neighborhood abandoned and totally in ruins, with only remnants of our past lives... What an eerie thought...

Bummer about your property. The airport is getting larger and larger, but I didn't know they were acquiring all that land to build another runway.

I've been through that neighborhood, but didn't know about some of the houses that were up in the woods further away from the road.

You ought to squirrel away copies of that flyer in different parts of your house, so that future explorers can feel like they've discovered what happened to your neighborhood.

And damn, sorry about your house and land.

Isn't that oddly ironic? One who does explores shall become one whose property is one day explored. I really am sorry to hear of your loss though. Truly. My home is on many acres in Virginia and I have wondered about what a future explorer would find exciting here. I suppose its the view from our back side on the hill in the woods.

I think what I find more problematic for your loss is it is not some tract home built as a canned version in 1968, but what may be a historic home from the 1800s. That is a loss.

I'd venture a guess they pay tax assessed rates for property which is unfair. I know what my property is assessed at is not near the actual sale value.

Yeah, it does suck beyond belief. But we are talking to the church who originally built this house waaaay back in the day, yes, they're still around and within walking distance from us. This used to be their old manse house. They will help us make sure neither the land nor the house gets acquired since, as someone else pointed it, it qualifies as a historical building and it is historically relevant to the area as the church is the second oldest in all of Mecklenburg county... so, we'll see.
