Typical Thursday night tower climb

Lord Nikon and I have climbed this tower several times but haven't gotten around to taking any shots of it. The tower is a few miles outside of Columbia and is a microwave broadcast tower. It does not have any antennas yet because no one has leased the tower yet. Its about 250-300 ft tall by our estimates.

Full view of the tower
1.

Its about a 30 min climb. The light off in the distance are Columbia.
We assumed the holes were for antennas but were not sure so if anyone could clarify that would be great.

2.

3.

4.

The loooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggggggg ladder

5.

The highest point on the tower. About 20 ft above the highest platform.

6.

Great climb and great views and lots of wind. Its amazing how much a huge tower can swing in the wind.

Believe me it was cold and windy enough to where that wouldn't have been a problem.

My thoughts exactly.
It's a good thing that there are so many who can climb like that!
It takes ALL kinds to explore this world...

That is amazing! I have serious vertigo but I try to over come it. I'm hoping to find something like this in the Charlotte area.

Cool pics!

That is basically what I have to do to get to work.

The climb isn't the job, it's just how you get TO the job We'd make the climb about 3 times a day on average.

Ever thought about getting a LadSafe so you can use the safety wire?

I know I know, only pansies use the safety wire, sure, okay. Just asking

That looks a whole lot like a Long Lines tower, down to the overbuilt, square-frame structure and catwalk deck with holes in.

Edit: If this is the case, it's an old tower, and used to have a bunker under it.

I'd love to take that climb. Vertigo is not uncommon. That only hits me if I have nothing to hold on to. If I am able to hang onto something, I'm good.

Yes, I actually have a full climbing harness and carabiners but choose not to use them. I enjoy the risk and the freedom of movement.

There were some antennas out in Iowa that I was DYING to climb.

Out near the town of West Branch. Anyone been out near there?

Those things have to be 1200ft tall!

Could you even imagine that view?

i am pretty sure I changed the lights on that tower about 10 years ago. I hated climbing because most towers are the same boring shit, till I got to go up an AT&T microwave tower, then it was more like chutes and ladders, only without the chutes. Equally as cool is the shelters, well most of them, depending on the site, some shelters have underground bunkers, and almost all of them are blast hardened to varying extent, even the vents for the air, that wall in front of them is to shield from a nuclear blast.
All of them had shithouses too, although finding a shithouse intact is becoming harder and harder to do, however many of them are still perfectly useable.

Those towers were designed for persons to climb without a modern full body sit in type harness. Back in those days RF engineers and techs had to climb their own shit.

Good luck using that safety cable. Its 5/16" aircraft cable, contrary to popular belief, perfectly legal under osha to use, however everything else these days uses 3/8 wire rope or 7 strand cable. That too was quite impressive for its day, back when most else was either a cramped safety cage, this bullshit involving sliding up a pipe with notches, or nothing at all.

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.
