| | | Are official tours frowned upon here on UER? Or just the luxury bus tours? Not trying to be a smartalec just trying to get a feel for the site.

Public tours of locations are frowned on....especially when they're for profit.

What have you got against carpooling?
PS) I'm not sure how that particular group expects to fit 25 people into one car.

Absolutely nothing. Friends share rides. We generally carpool every time there is an out of state convention. Nothing like 7 adults in the back of a minivan from Minneapolis to Illinois. =) We don't advertize tours utilizing luxury transportation to every stranger, rapist, and tagger on Craigslist (or where ever).

I think you missed the sarcasm of my post. The image was made by some people I'm trying to stop who visit sensitive locations with 25-30 people at a time, through publicly advertised (but free) tours.

Thanks for the clarification. I only did one tour put on by the building owner before they start renovations. No luxury bus but we did get some history, good photos and free coffee.

Hey, if a building owner gives a tour, great. Sometimes, you have to sign up for the legit tour....in order to "get lost" and do something a little more self guided. Explorers giving the public tours of locations is frowned on.

You inspired me to do this:
Also, I'll back you up on owners giving tours. That's a whole different game from recreational trespassers giving tours of locations without permission. [last edit 4/11/2013 2:31 AM by Steed - edited 1 times]

| | | Thanks you guys cleared it up for me. I have one "location" lined up to explore but it would be with owner permission and I am going to work on a couple buildings as well also with permission. Was hoping that wouldn't be a total loser thing to do.

| | | Only respectable scholars (e. g. Greg Brick) are allowed to organize UE-related bus tours for profit without being frowned upon. I hear Greg has planned some.
I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird. Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping. |

Then they hopped into a huge white passenger van that was parked right outside the front door. Even when they don't have the tour bus out full of old women, they're still drawing unnecessary attention to themselves and the location.

| | | With more exposure (stuff like: I'm going to make an urbex movie and put it on netflix!, there's a new Discovery channel reality TV program about urbex, read my snazzy photo blog, etc...) comes more interest. More interest makes more opportunities, someone always capitalizes on those opportunities, and next thing you know there's a Disney world set up in Michigan Central Station. Goofy guides you around, points out peeling paint and lonely chairs, and you buy six dollar hot dogs at the concession stand. You think I'm either full of shit, and idiot, or trolling. I'm not, it's coming, just wait.

I liked Moe's mention of Rome as a sort of super-Detroit... I bet the ancient Roman explorers would be pissed if they knew it was a tourist trap now.
