Several Sunday Stops, part the second.

This is the second half of my adventure last Sunday with a friend: part one: http://crows.dreamwidth.org/251228.html

Speaking of which. Beyond the first house I posted, I didn't get to poke around any of these as much as I wanted to. A couple of them were just roadside admiration pieces because they were right next to someone's actual house and if nothing else I wouldn't want my privacy violated in that way so I'm not gonna go skulk around somebody's active backyard. But the others I'd like to go back to, so on the off chance that anyone in my area knows any of these places and would feel comfortable sharing their notes with me, I'd love to talk more about them.

On with the show!

After that, we stopped here. We didn't go too far into this one because it seemed a bit more unstable than I was comfortable crawling about in. The road was also busier, and it appeared to be part of the same property as an active farm (with another abandoned house on it but that was definitely attached to the cows and I don't want to be accused of interfering with any cows so we gave that one a miss).

This one shows how the tree is growing around the collapsed porch roof better.

Please note the Ninja Turtle hanging from the ceiling.

I had to pull over and snap this one, even if I didn't want to make much of a go onto this obviously active property to get a look inside. Lovely facade.

Now, this one I really want another chance at. There were tire tracks around it in the snow that didn't go to the barn also on the property and the whole place felt off. We bailed mid-examination because my companion thought she heard something possibly non-animal move upstairs. We'll probably head back sooner than later.

With a special cameo appearance by my friend's hand! That thing laying tipped over in the middle of the floor is a Winnie the Pooh teapot, by the way. I was feeling jittery, but should have gotten a more detailed shot of that. I mean, honestly.

WHAT EVEN IS THIS. This is the wallpaper. This is even worse than the wallpaper IN MY HOUSE. Which is saying something. You don't even understand. The horror, the horror.

We went back out after that and peered through the windows a bit.

Then in the back door.

(This looked less like a weird Google Satellite Maps image when we were actually there. Knock-off Grant Wood? Oh, Iowa.)

My camera was having some focus troubles (I think I busted some of its ability to figure out the shutter timing at some point recently and need to look into finally retiring it). This tiny back room was where the damage looked worst, but the floor was beginning to rot out by the door so I was very carefully trying to maneuver around it, get a look at what's in that closet on the left, and not bring anything down from the ceiling when my friend heard the noise and we scattered.

This next one is another I really want back at. The grounds looked incredible, and the house didn't look properly inhabitable at all, but there was a quite recentish looking car parked outside and it still has its mailbox staunchly posted beside the road.

Here is a little one that we saw on the side of the highway. I would have gotten out for a closer look, but a car pulling out of a side street close by turned around and drove back away from our location more slowly than I was comfortable with. This photo doesn't show how dramatically the house is sinking at the back. Another location for later.

Snapped blindly from the window of my moving car!

Pretty, lonely thing spied on the way toward our last stop before heading north back into town.

And the final stop. I found a photo of this place online somewhere, and the poster said that someone had salvaged the original stained glass and fixtures from the building. I hope that person is correct, because I'm sure this place was beautiful in its day.

Didn't do too much surveying around the whole thing because there was a farmer at a house across the street out on his tractor, and by the look of it this may have been on his property (next to other functional buildings). So we played roadside gawkers and didn't stick around too long.

Then we drove home. And by 'drove home', I mean I promptly got very turned around, and ended up somehow driving south again, which I realized upon pulling up on Spine House after I swear I was driving in a Northerly direction and poining out the smokestacks of Origin factory in Muscatine, off above the treetops...

I actually stopped at the photo of the wallpaper to admire it... and then I saw your comment. If it was me, I'd have tried to walk out with the sheet rock it's glued to...

I love that shot of the yellow brick/wooden house. Very cool. I wouldn't put it in my house, but the wallpaper is a pretty awesome find too. The church looks pretty cool, it's a shame you couldn't get a better look at it. Doesn't look like there's much left of it anyway though. Nice photos, thanks for sharing!

That house was pretty strange, the wallpaper one, that and the big old house on the hill have hung onto my brain and I really hope I can go back soon for a better look.

More places you must help me find, Crows! A couple of them look awfully familiar.

Those are some of the best decaying farmhouse pics I've ever seen. (I say that w/ experience because I live in a farmhouse-turned-city-house myself )

Instant reading material if you plaster it in a bathroom. I used to read the walls at Subway while waiting for my sandwich (back when they had subway-news-themed wallpaper).

<3! Thank you They may not be as exciting as those crazy decaying steelworks and other big industrial facilities you can find elsewhere, but... you know, there's a certain country charm ;) I really enjoy finding them.
