| | Hanford tours < on 2/28/2013 12:07 AM >
| | | Registration Begins at 6:00 PM PST on Monday, March 4, 2013. Visitors will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis only through the online web registration system. http://www5.hanford.gov/publictours/ The tour route includes: Hanford's 300 Area where uranium was fabricated into fuel rods. The nine nuclear reactors in the 100 Area located along the Columbia River where the fuel rods were irradiated to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. The original Hanford and White Bluffs town sites. Visitors also will have a guided walking tour of the historic B Reactor, the world's first full-scale plutonium production reactor. Additionally, the tour includes briefings on several Hanford facilities supporting today's cleanup mission: Hanford's Cold Test Facility, a scaled version of one of Hanford's 177 underground nuclear waste storage tanks. Hanford's Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP), which operated from 1949 to 1989, and represented the final step in the plutonium production effort at Hanford. Workers are now undertaking the monumental challenge of dismantling the PFP complex with the goal of tearing it down by 2016. The Waste Treatment Plant, the world's largest facility for turning chemical and radioactive waste into a stable glass form suitable for safe, long-term storage. The Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility, an 18-million-ton capacity landfill where Hanford's low-level radioactive, hazardous, and mixed waste are disposed.

| | | It's a great tour and it changes a little every year as they showcase the current happenings on the site. Everyone's chances of snagging the seats they want are pretty nil, the best trick is to keep checking the page throughout the year and get seats from people who decline in the upcoming week before the tour. This means being ready to make the trip in as little as three days but hey, you want to go on the tour right?

| | | Are they restricting personal photography on these tours? Do they confiscate your phone, camera, etc. when entering and give these back to you when you leave?

| | | Hanford public tours have no photography allowed, they'll tell you at the start of the tour if you pull your phone out they'll stop the tour until you put it away. Manhattan B Reactor tour has photography allowed but it's primarily the B Reactor.

| | | Hell yeah sounds awesome! I totally want to get in on one of these tours. Those pesky leaking waste storage tanks sure are getting a lot of attention... Following a press conference few weeks ago: http://usnews.nb...gton-governor-says Published today: http://rt.com/us...-leak-nuclear-635/ Of course there are no numbers that would mean anything to a nuclear engineer, just the usual sensationalism. Pop scientist Michio Kaku is humorously quoted as claiming it is "the most toxic substance known to science" but the monitoring stations around the site reveal "no immediate risk": http://www.reuters...SBRE91L19G20130223

| | | Can't believe I've never heard of this tour before -- must go! Might have to pick up some surplus radiation detectors and dosimeters on eBay before hand, though.

| | | Not willing to even waste my time, No cameras allowed? Might be interesting, but without being able to take my camera, not worth the drive and time.
Someone sneak one in and get some cool shots.

| | | I had a cousin that worked there for a long time and he gave as a pretty brief tour. I was a lot younger but I remember quite a bit about it. What got me the most was all the hand made tools that had to be fabricated when it first opened. I hope they still have them there...
Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the waters become clear? |
