People encounters

When recently exploring an abandoned house I came across someone that was on the property. I quickly turned around and left the property, not wanting to take any chances.

What are some of the experiences you guys have had encountering people while exploring.

Scrappers, squatters, other explorers, historic tours, hipsters, movie shoots, angry hicks, friendly hicks, party kids, guards, cops.

Basically all types except violent. Okay maybe once the cops were violent.

Same here. Only ones to ever break out guns were the cops.

Take notice of markers on private property and put them into context: an old, water-stained "no trespassing" sign on an old factory isn't going to be as big a deal as a brand new "no trespassing" at the entrance of a pine-tree farm.

Odds are no one cares about that factory and that sign was put there simply as a deterrent many years ago, however the brand new "no trespassing" sign at the tree-farm was put there by a gun-toting, government-fearing lunatic. (this was all taken from experience, FYI)

I may not believe in marriage, but I do believe in best men.

A friend and I went out to take some pictures of an abandoned factory on Friday. We'd been inside for several hours and were making our way to the exit. As we approached a window we saw someone (with a camera - probably a fellow explorer) sprinting alongside the building with security in hot pursuit. We waited a bit and then bolted out in the opposite direction. If we had decided to leave a minute earlier it would have been an interesting encounter.

Also, that picture creeps me out for some reason.

Is that seriously a person you encountered? It's creepy.

Tulsa has a very well known drain system elm creek. Last time I went exploring down there my flashlight kept catching something reflective, finally got close enough it was a bike reflector. I was nervous at first, just walked by smiled and waived. Did not say a word. awkward. Older man in ratty clothes trying to stay out of the wind.

First off, that photo is seriously creepy. It looks like something out of a horror movie.
I've run into people several times while exploring. Most of the time they're fellow explorers (sometimes you even know them), but once in a while it's a stranger. It's not always necessary to call stranger danger the moment you see someone unfamiliar while exploring, but it's a good idea to be cautious. Most of the time the people you run into will be explorers, people who think they're explorers and the homeless, but I'm sure there are those out there who would cause you harm.

When it comes to scrappers they generally want as much to do with you as you do them. As long as you let them be they'll generally keep to themselves. Sometimes they're interested in why you're there, other times they want you gone. However, you never know if they'll report you while they split.

The homeless generally want to be left alone as well. They can be very protective of their belongings and it's best to keep your distance, mostly to just be polite. Some of them can be very social and I've seen videos of those who are more than happy to give you a personal tour of the building (they know all the nooks and crannies you never would've found by yourself). Some explorers say to bring food, cash or cigarettes to give as a thank you for them letting you wander their temporary home, but I've never done this.

Drug addicts/dealers are some of the worst people you can run into. Of course some may not care that you're there, but there are always the infamous stories of people stumbling on drug cooks and meth labs. There are telltale signs that are listed within the forums and you should really brush up on and remember them.

Other explorers are the best people you can run into, obviously. Most of the time they'll exchange a friendly hello before carrying on their way. It really depends on the explorer. I personally love to meet new people, especially in our exploring element. Sometimes explorers will tell you about places within the site that you might've missed.

I've met mostly nice people. People that live at the site or just other explorers exploring the place.
I made friend with a hobo, on the way back out of the site, she was chroming and rapping to Eminem.

And this once, a bunch of very tough blokes came in at this one massive industrial site. One had a pink glove. My friend told me they'd be dealing drugs. He started walking towards us like he was about to kill us (Yes, literally); we managed to mumble some words like 'hey, how's it going?', then the next thing was us running through bushes trying to find a way out.

Once things get political, they want us to stop shooting and start dancing.
I don't dance.

That picture reminds me of the time I ran into Slenderman. (that bastard.)

but no, seriously, the latest encounter I had involved me scaring the living daylights out of some old guy and his dog whilst checking out a drain in Philadelphia. Never before have I seen a look of terror on an old man's face like that before. But I'm sure my outfit and the fact that I was coming up from beneath a bridge in Philly didn't do much to help me either. If he could have, I bet he would have started running. heheh...

I was on the top floor of the Rochester State Hospital looking around when the door on the stairwell opened up and four people walked out. They were friendly and I was able to get some more info on cool places in the building from them.
