| | Cool 1800's building in Central Iowa < on 2/15/2013 7:45 PM >
| | | I recently had a chance to explore a nice old building here in town. It was built in the 1800's and has been several businesses, as well as a private dwelling at times. It is on the historical registry and has some cool features. Unfortunately, it has been slated for demolition sometime later this year. Interestingly the building has started self destructing from the inside out. The bricks are turning to dust and the dust is piling up along the walls.
Neat handrail guarding the stairs to the very dark basement:
The ceiling is really cool embossed tin and it is surprisingly intact, except one tile:
Here is the one missing tile near the spiral stairway leading to the second floor:
The second floor is more like an apartment, but has some strange industrial appliances.
Couple of cool knobs:
Enjoy!

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store. |

| | | Beautiful spaces inside that place! And I love all the photos of the hardware. The house I live in has some of that lovely old Victorian metalwork in it on the doors and whatnot. The fam wants to sell it as a teardown and I swear, if I can, I will come back here to steal all of it if that happens. What I will do with a collection of old Victorian doorknobs and keyhole plates, I do not know. How late in the year is its execution date, do you know? What are the odds of someone toddling over from the east end of the state being able to get a peek inside? eta: ALSO those lanterns! [last edit 2/16/2013 1:25 AM by crows - edited 1 times]

| | | Ditto about all the hardware in this place. Hopefully someone is able to salvage the staircase, railing, windows, doors, tiles, etc. It's all really beautiful—especially as I'm helping restore a huge Queen Anne right now.

| | | The building is owned by the State Property and Leasing Department. They opened it up for us last Saturday morning. The visit was arranged by the DSM historical Society. He wasn't positive of a date for the demo to begin. From what the State guy said the company doing the building demo would be in charge of salvage and what-not. I can only assume they will try to salvage all they can before the actual demo. Since it is a historical site, it was offered by the state to be moved. But no one was interested.
Another building was moved a few years ago, one of my cow-orker's husbands was involved with it. It was featured on one of those moving big things shows on Discovery Channel I believe. I need to get in touch with him and see if he missed it or if he has any interest in it.
He was also involved with moving this one:
Looking at the construction of the one I was in last weekend, I would have to say it would be very difficult to relocate due to it's construction. Being connected to another building would be a problem as well. But the smaller of the 2 that were moved, was connected to another building.

| | | Love the photos of all the details (hardware, etc.). I was not aware that a building listed in a historical registry was ever eligible for demolition - how disappointing!

| | | I've been lucky enough to be in some of these buildings that are still in use. They have a feel all their own inside, many originally had copper tiles on the celling, I'm surprised to see all the tiles intact!
Is that snow or asbestos? |

Jealous. The house (now divided, with minimal structural changes to the interior, into apartments) I live in would be so magnificent if it had been kept up... no tin ceilings, but it's really a lovely building. There are photos floating around that my grandmother had developed from negatives she found in the basement when they bought the grand old thing from back when it was a single-family home (of epic proportions) and everything was still shiny. I think this is my 'I'm in it for the story' showing through, though ;)
