| | maintaining a secret room? < on 6/29/2004 7:36 PM >
| | | I was just thinking about the concept of a secret room or locker of sorts. Do any of you have one of these in a building that's in a city? I mean, somewhere that you may keep things? I don't mean a place to live, but maybe like a secret office or something in a closet somewhere in a city? get the idea? i was just wondering because, i remember a few weeks ago "mr. snee" listing a few places he figured he could live in the city, if he absolutely had to. and because i'm heading to a concert tonight, but don't want to bring my backpack, and don't know of any lockers, but was considering stashing it behind some pipes in a basement mech. room or closet or something, while i'm downtown. | | | There was a book about hiding stuff in public places published years ago by, I think, Loompanics. Doubt it's still in print, and, to be frank, it wasn't that great of a book, IMO. Most of it's common sense, once you stop and think about it. Don't recall what it was called, though. I have some materiel hidden in a park near my home. Food bars, couple bottles of water, a little money, stuff like that. In Neal Stephenson's classic novel Snow Crash, YT keeps her work uniform (that she thinks her mom doesn't know about) stashed above a ceiling tile in the bathroom of a fast-food joint near her home. Definite possibility, I guess. It requires some scouting in advance (or dumb luck), but if you find a manhole you can pop, in an out-of-the-way area, that has stepirons or a ladder, you can hook stuff onto the top rung for easy storage. Caribiners are your friend. The thing about hiding stuff in buildings, mechanical rooms, closets and the like is that in this paranoid post-9/11 world, people don't think "Oh, someone left their backpack here", they first think "oh crap, it's a bomb". For small stuff, and short-term storage, those fire-extinguisher cubbies you often see in back hallways are a godsend, as long as they've got a door you can open without breaking. A lot of them I've seen have either frosted or wavy glass, and, besides, who looks closely at those things, anyway?

| | | Got friends/contacts at Canada Post? Get a key for the "Postie Lockers" that they use to keep their rain gear/personal items and mailbags in. Those are the flat topped boxes that are about the same size as a mailbox. I've seen some old ones that are green and new R,W & B ones around the province. You would never use it during the day though, only at nite and get yer shit out early the next morn. Just a thought. This "room" is just for small stuff I assume and not a place to crash, cook & eat.

That's a good idea. I'm going to have to do something like that... maybe hide an ammo can somewhere in the woods, loaded with whatever I'd need to get me though any kind of worst case scenario. (money, spares of all my keys, a couple boxes of ammo, energy bars, bottled water, maps, an LED flashlight w/lithium batteries, etc...) edit: To answer the original question... I used to have a few underground places that I could stay the night or longer if I needed to (never needed to though). The best one was in the crawlspace of a dorm. It was secure, roomy, and had good access to laundry, showers, and drink machines. But now I'm living in a new town, and haven't found anything like that here yet. | | | The book Krenta mentioned is How to Hide Things in Public Places by Dennis Fiery. I have it and Krenta's right, it's not that good. To sum up the book in a sentence, if you look around a lot and think creatively you'll see tons of hiding spots everywhere you look. I like to find potential apartments, too. Once upon a time when I used to live in Pickering I had an under-construction house that I used as my "Toronto HQ". I miss that place. These days I figure I have a good half dozen spots around the city where I could set up shop if I needed to, but mostly I just try to stay on Liz's good side. Ninj http://www.infiltration.org

| | | I know of an underground bunker or two that I could use in a pinch. On top of that, I could always use the old POW camp for a place to stay, if need be.

| | | I've got a few places in the GTA area that are REALLY decent (read: secure) places to stash stuff (including myself), should the need arise. I've also got a place to go should the shit hit the fan, so to speak. Myself and abunch of people *almost* went up there when the blackout hit, should it have been a terrorist act. It's far enough from a central area that it wouldn't be leveled by a nuclear blast - plus the building was made to survive a nuclear blast. It's a VERY good idea to be prepared for anything, as you never know what will happen. Look at the blackout for example. 24 hours (for the most part) without electricity and everybody was freaking out like it was the end of the world. Well, let me tell you something, 24 hours without power is NOTHING. What would you do if it lasted a week? Society would grind to a hault. It's a good idea to have three separate ready kits. One kit would be a Primary Care Kit, which would have everything you need to stay alive for 12 hours. Then you have a second kit called the Extended Care Kit, which would be enough to keep you alive for 72 hours. Then there's the Long Term Care Kit which has enough stuff to keep you going for 1 week, so in total, you could go for about 10 days. If NOTHING else, keep a 12 hour kit in your car and a 72 hour kit in your house, if not both. It only costs about 50 dollars for the 12 hour kit and about 100 dollars for the 72 hour kit. Very cheap insurance if you ask me. -Ex

| | | There is plenty of places to stash places. And not to be the un-creative idiot, but sometimes the most secure is the most obvious. Though I'm unsure of the cost of a safety deposit box. I really doubt they're as cool as they are in the movies. Unless of course you have guns inside of your box, or tons of different types of currency. But maybe you can work on accumulating guns and money. Ergh, I went off on a tangent.

| | | Well, I've got a "safe house" that has about $150 in cash, a camping stove, enough water/food to live for a week. Not quite what you'd see in the movies, but hey, it serves it's purpose, right? Said "safe house" is just a room in a *very* secure location a friend of mine works at where he lets me stash a few things, should I need to. -Ex

| | | I try to keep a locker at the local trainstation or the mall depending on what location fits my usual travel patterns. I have a safety deposit box but it is pretty useless to store anything that you want to have acess to after bank hours. The woods can be useful but you have to check it every few weeks, If ice, rain, heat, or snow doesnt crack it open then animals usually will. I just keep a back pack loaded with A couple bottles of water, a couple energy bars, a flash light, a north american road atlas, 100 bucks, a phone card, 5 dollars in mixed change, A toothbrush and assorted other person items, a wash towel and a change of clothes, a cheap watch, and a small am/fm radio. I used to have it just for when i got off of work but now i just leave it there in case shit goes down.
