Isn't 12 is a little young for UE? But then again, I guess it depends on the location.
|
Meh. I've had an eight-year-old spinning steel wool in a storm drain. Like a pro. It depends on the location and the young one.

Isn't that how we lose a ton of people though? People get shitfaced and try to jump down elevator shafts and whatnot

| | | Usually, if the site is in the countryside, I explore it during the day, simply because its easier and safer that way. Places downtown I prefer to scout during the day, then return at dusk to explore. If the place doesn't seem structurally stable or I'm quite sure there wont be a problem getting in, I'll go during the day instead though. I also only explore storm drains during the day.

| | | It definitely depends on the scenery. Both is also nice to get a different experience and atmosphere. However I think city areas are more thrilling at night!

City areas are also much more beautiful at night! If you're in Urbex largely for photography, all the city lights and nightly going-ons make beautiful (but kind of cliche as they're overdone) shots.

| | | I am just paranoid I'm going to run in a homeless person at night because they would try to find shelter where I would be exploring. Is this logical?

If you creep around so quietly that you won't wake up a paranoid person sleeping in a hidden corner of a.derelict building, then maybe. Squatters are obvious from the shit on the walls (look ma, no TP) and normal homeless usually avoid everyone. Don't go in back areas without knocking, and remember that it's their house.

There's a madness to my methods
| | Re: Night or Day? <Reply # 28 on 1/29/2013 11:49 PM >
| | | I'll break it down by locations. Not a definitive guide; just my personal preferences. Drains: Anytime, but night is better so your eyes don't have to adjust to the light when getting out (they're generally pitch black anyway). Plus, if you pop a manhole in a random street there will be less people at night to witness you. Construction/Climbs/Subway Tunnels: Common sense. Very late night, of course, unless it's so far removed from human contact that no one could see you. Even then there may still be workers to contend with. Abandonment: To make optimal use of daylight, I generally explore the bottom floors first, then go up as time progresses. It usually gets a bit brighter as I go up each level and I can watch the sun set from the rooftops. Then I get night shots.

How'd we get here, and how are we getting out of here?!
| | | Re: Night or Day? <Reply # 29 on 2/9/2013 4:05 PM >
| | | This question is logically flawed because it depends not just on the site, but the style of photography and exploration. For me it depends greatly on the building I'm exploring and frequently I'll choose to make multiple visits to the same site to capture different feeling photos as well. Older industrial sites are cool in the day (especially in the golden hours) since you can get all the lights in the windows, but frequently this same effect can be created with street lamp coming through the windows. It's all a personal preference and feeling out the site. If your going at night make sure you have a few flashlights, watch them by the windows, upper stories of buildings are safer since generally people aren't looking up, nor are generally paying attention to the building, but above all have fun. Oh and about the hobos, I went exploring to about a year ago, when a strange noise started echoing down the hallways of this abandoned school. Soon a hobo that was practicing throat singing appeared, after chatting for a bit, he lead me back to his room, where we smoked weed and chatted long in to the morning. By the end of the night I had a standing invitation to return and shoot whenever from the hobos that occupied the building. After many nights of photography with these amazing occupants I began shooting a series of them, unfortunately before I could complete my series the occupants were evicted and the building demolished. Now not all occupants are going to be as inviting, but if your whits are about you, you'll be fine. I think what I'm trying to say is you "have nothing to fear but fear itself" -FDR

| | | The best time I have found is pre dawn. You usually have enough light to see everything and take pictures while having a lower chance of being caught.
