1st Post - Abandoned Building

Whats up everyone!

This is my first post/introduction, so I'll throw in a little bio before I get to actually describing the site photographs. I have been an explorer since I was a young child and I cannot even begin to estimate the number of strange and fucked up places I have found myself in over the years. For whatever reason, I have always had a particular affinity for underground structures, tunnels, bunkers, sewers, etc., although I enjoy just about every flavor of abandoned space to be honest. I am very interested in doing more deep city work, and plan on making that happen in the near future.

Until now I have always explored these places on my own and without any knowledge of a wider community of explorers. I recently became aware of the UER forums via the film "Urban Explorers: Into The Darkness," and I am stoked to be a part of the group! I look forward to learning from everyone and sharing what I can. Hopefully I can attend a meet-up when / if one is organized in my general geographic area (mid east coast).

All right, enough of all that shit. Here is a building that I found and entered. (Disclaimer: I am no photographer and will never claim to be.) As far as I can tell I am not supposed to include any type of detail on location, so suffice to say that this is located in the heart of a major East Coast US city. This is one of those locations that would be given away by external shots, so I will refrain from posting those. It was buttoned up pretty tight but I managed to get inside without actually "breaking" anything. The building itself is pretty crazy looking from the outside, about seven stories tall, decrepit as all hell and largely ignored by the local population, for whom I am sure it blends into the background.

(Please critique this post so I can better learn the formatting guidelines you guys like to adhere to.)

1.

The first three floors were sealed up pretty tightly as I said, so I was forced to climb up rather high on the exterior of the building before I could gain entry.

2.

View from the front looking down on the street from the second floor.

3.

The building itself was in poor condition. The floor was very rotten, and I had to proceed carefully.

4.

5.

6.

Several rooms were taken up by machinery of this sort. The bold headline cutout on the top of the last picture says: "GULF CEASE-FIRE," which could possibly allow for a rough estimate of when the structure was abandoned.

7.

8.

9.

The upper floors were a real mess, scattered with all kinds of debris, as well as a ton of shoes.

10.

11.

12.

13.

The very top floors had a forlorn feel to them. The rooms were somber and empty for the most part.

14.

15.

The old safe had been worked over pretty hard, but seemed to still be intact. The neon sign, coupled with the shoes and the machinery lead me to believe that the building used to house some sort of shoe repair shop, although it seemed an awfully big space for just that one business.

I have a bunch more pictures, particularly of the roof and basement, but in the interest of keeping this post to a somewhat manageable size I will refrain from posting them now. I had a blast exploring this place - it had a wonderful feel to it. I find that abandoned places that are in the middle of a busy area have a very unique vibe to them, as though being ignored in such a populated area makes them even more of an outcast, even more alone.

Great first post. Your post formatting is fine, though the numbering system was confusing! Your photos are also not the worst ever seen here. ;)

Not a bad first post. Welcome to UER. External shots are alright as long as you arent like "this is byberry mill in western Oklahoma by the satsop mental asylum!" Lol
Looks like a decent place though. Did you try any shoes on?

Thanks guys. And I'll work on the numbering next time I post, it is all jacked up now that I look at it.

And yeah I actually tried a bunch of them on, ended up finding a pair of genuine crocodile skin dress shoes that were my exact size. I am pretty strict about taking nothing / leaving nothing, but I made an exception for the croc skins haha

No joke. I wear them whenever I have somewhere really fancy to go. They are easily the nicest shoes I have ever owned. I had to get them resoled and cleaned (they were at the bottom of a huge mess of dirty shoes like the one I posted the pic of) but other than that they were in perfect shape.

There's no problem with going back and fixing the numbers now, by the way.

When I post I prefer to put the captions at the top, so you read the caption before you see the whole picture. It's a matter of personal choice but it seems to work best that way.

Thanks steed, I will keep all of that in mind. I believe I've fixed the numbers, I'll keep playing with the caption placement.

Good pictures! And nice write up! I also am new here and was astounded to find a site like this where there are other people who are into this stuff too! I thought I was one of only a few who had this fascination. I couldn't be more wrong! Hoping to learn more and hopefully make come contributions!

Nice work, you should feel good knowing your first post isn't something to be embarrassed about. I'm embarrassed about mine, lol.

...and for someone who isn't a photographer, as you've put it, you've done well!

Thanks, it was a cool place to explore. I had pics of the basement, which was full of all kinds of weird stuff, but they disappeared when my macbook's HD decided to stop working for no reason. I plan on going back when I get my new camera and taking some better quality pics.
