I am ordinarily not big on donating to "free" sites like this, but I know from my own website that hosting, maintaining domain names, and keeping DNS redirects is not the cheapest proposition. I know because I just spent more than $200 to keep my own site up. Mine is nothing compared to here though. I bet this site gets more traffic in a day than mine does in a few months too.

No site is truly "free" -- Someone is always paying for it. Some people leech off the hosting at their company, some people get hosting included with their university education or from their internet provider, some people resort to "free" hosts that fill the site with banner ads. But in the end someone is still paying the bills.
This site survives on the goodwill of the members who make it great. I personally will donate small amounts of money ($10 to $20) to support websites or communities that I find useful or enlightening, or to support an independant software developer who'se software I enjoy.

i for one agree with av, i pay for software i enjoy and use, i pay at the door of clubs id get in for free , just because that money pays the dj or band , i tip well at the diner after the club too. i have my own website, and run 2 others as well. it all costs money. even with the huge amounts of storage on unix servers these days, the bandwidth is costly. we all know how much bandwidth this site takes up. i for one am a newbie and as soon as iseen the the donate link, i sent em a few $. ihave no problems sending in $5/mo, i actually think it's pretty damn cheap and wont be complaining. i just wanna say thanx for having such a forum, last nite i was privy to a lengthy phone conversation with a member of this board. i'm learning new things and enjoying myself as i am able to share some experiences with others . i'm happy and would just like to end with a big thank you
