|  | | | This is a pretty well-known spot among Savannah locals. It's also well-known to law enforcement, so I always do my best to keep a relatively low profile -- the location is such that flashlights and camera strobes would be fairly visible. I have a few friends that have had run-ins with Homeland Security and local police here, and I've run into GPA myself. The gate used to be left open, but has recently be covered in razor wire and chained shut. It's still very possible to get in, but it's pretty clear that visitors aren't welcome. Last time I checked, the property was for sale.
In any case, the first and second times there I only had a cell phone for photography. I made it back with a Canon 5D MKII with a couple lenses, but my friends were a bit too impatient for me to get the frames I really wanted to. Maybe I'll head back again and try and get some more shots. In any case, here are a few pictures.
First of all, you can get to the roof of the main silos, which you can see on the left in this picture:
You need to climb up the ladders that run next to the elevator shaft. As someone has kindly marked for you, there are 15 ladders, with 14 rungs each.
They alternate side to side and back to back up the shaft, so it's relatively safe climbing -- the farthest you can fall is about 8 feet.
There are fun little marking at each floor -- I won't give away any fun ones, but they provide a nice bit of motivation for what can be a sweaty and dusty climb.

The "little" machinery you can see on the top of the silos in the first picture is actually pretty huge when you get up next to it:
Additionally to the silos, there is an attached building that appears to have been used to transport the cement from the silos to a grinding machine, and then across a conveyor belt to a truck port.
The place smelled really strongly of weed. We thought someone was growing plants on the roof, but didn't want to fuck with any possible booby traps or with the fact that we would be highly visible to the nearby shipping yard bulls on top of the roof. Still, something to bear in mind while exploring. There is an additional small (trailer-like) office building nearby. The interior has been severely vandalized (graffiti, destruction) and there isn't much of interest in there (just a couple bathrooms and a few other empty rooms), although there is some pretty good graffiti on the outside.

Thanks, yeah.
Haha when I took the picture it freaked me out. Turned out to be a microwavable meal tray that caught the light just right... Ghost Hunters would have had a time with it though.
