Old Sea to Sky bridge

I been lurking around here long enough, about time I actually posted something...
I would guess some of you are familiar with this location as it's very easy to access, the bridge deck anyway, the ravine not so much.

This bridge along with a section of highway 99 were abandoned when the highway was widened in the 70's. Much of the old highway follows the current route, other parts have been absorbed into municipal roads. However this bridge and a short section of road got "caught in limbo" so to speak.

View of the bridge as you approach from off a local hiking trail:

Built in 1956 apparently:

Some pictures of the bridge deck itself, note the slightly banked surface, this is so cars can drive at freeway speeds across it:

Continuing past the bridge takes you on a walk along a stretch of road that in certain places looks like it could still be used, other places it's clearly overgrown:

Eventually the road just ends at some trees with a small dirt path leaded through:

On the other side, the current highway:

We also explored the ravine below the bridge, something I wouldn't recommend, it's dangerous and really not that interesting. The main danger is loose gravel on the sides of the canyon which almost gave me a quick and painful shortcut to the bottom a couple times.

There's also the fact that local idiots tend to throw things from the bridge for fun, a hard hat isn't a bad thing to have.

A shopping cart someone chucked from the bridge:

An Xbox 360... looks like they fixed the RROD ;)

Might return eventually as the support structure looks somewhat climbable, I didn't poke around under the bridge that much since there was evidence of squatters. I've also heard there are other disused sections of the Sea to Sky...

I've always loved the concept of overgrown highways.

Love that bridge, it's so small. Feels so weird to be on it, like a car could come around the bend at any second, especially since you can hear the traffic roaring on the new highway nearby.

It's a cool oddity alright. Thanks to some clues from Steam Punk, I checked it out a few years ago.

Agreed. Thanks for sharing, nobody. Any chance you could PM me location details so I may feature it on Haunted BC sometime in the future? We have several abandoned highway stretches/bridges posted and this would be an awesome addition.

Unfortunately I don't get to the lower mainland much for exploring... a pity because there is a lot of good stuff you guys have there.

Nice post - I've been meaning to go there and grab some photos but you beat me to it! There's also a water reservoir on the eastern side of the bridge, just north of the road which you can climb up to the top of.

I grew up in that municipality and we've had a few big parties on that bridge, often with the police showing up!!

Thanks for posting
