| | | I'm sure this topic has been discussed... < on 10/12/2012 2:33 PM >
| | | ...but, what got you into this? I know I've had an interested in decaying structures and photography since I was young. It wasn't until living with my (now) fiance that I got really into the history behind the de-institutionalization of psychiatric hospitals in the 80s. This connected my love of history, intrigue of the unknown, interest in architecture, and my interest in photographer all together. When we were actually living in Brooklyn (moved upstate slightly) we realized how close we were to so many of these former institutions and, through internet research, realized there were masses of other people into this as well. So....back to the first sentence... what got YOU into it?

| | | I got into it hoping there would be a forum where I could see the same topics brought up over and over again and watch people fight and bicker with each other over pointless nonsense. Also so I could write in run-on sentences. [last edit 10/12/2012 4:10 PM by MonkeyPunchBaby - edited 1 times]

| | | Bodies. They were piling up everywhere. What had started as a hobby of hunting down people who insist on posting repetitive topics on internet forums without checking the search button turned into a full time job. You would not believe how many people don't even understand the simple concept of a fucking search button and just post shit like "Hey I am SURE this is out there, but i cant be bothered to take the 30 seconds to look for it and have al the answers to my question. So, I will just post it again, and ask everyone to take precious time out of their day to type it all up again so that I can sit here sipping some fruity drink and be amused." At first I just took their testicles to ensure that they couldn't breed, but quickly I realized that they coul still type, as the stupid fucking posts continued to happen. I couldn't go around ripping out everyone's modems, so I did the only natural thing and began killing them all as slowly and painfully as I could. You know ,normal stuff like slow insertions of swords into the rectum, small slices of flesh with razor blades so they bleed out slowly while I douse them with rubbing alcohol to prevent clotting and maximize pain. Nothing really out of the ordinary. But I needed a place for all the bodies. I found UER and the data base, and viola! Problem solved. There are locations all over the place. Every town that i travel to has one, just a click away. So..... Brooklyn huh? *goes to check database.
Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door. "It's ok Officer, I watch a lot of cop shows on tv, so i am practically one of you guys." - sadly, that didn't work. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonno23/ All my photos suck. |

| | | OK, I'll play nice, but only because I was born in Brooklyn. For me, exploring is all about connecting to the miners who lived and worked in horrible conditions just to pull ore out of the ground. Walking through a ghost town and finding a bit of a broken bowl makes me wonder about what they ate, who cooked it, and how the bowl got broken. Inside the mines I marvel at the amount of work it must have taken to get the wooden beams from the forest, transported across the desert, cut to size, then moved into place at the bottom of a 300' shaft. So at this mine, did all their food come out of cans?

| | | Growing up in a dying city and having no money to do anything else. The empty buildings were our playground. S where we'd hang and drink beer and talk about girls. For us it was just life. Then one day people made it a hobby. I figures hey why not. Still too broke to go anywhere else. hahaha

The city of Yonkers (due to "busing" from lawsuits- lead to dropping enrollment) closing & abandoning the Public School (where my father and my aunt attended) in my neighborhood- just before I was born (and which my older brother was to attend). I was always fascinated to see what the inside looked like. The windows were covered with sheets of "oak-tag" (from the inside) but eventually were covered with plywood (from the outside). Before I had the opportunity to explore it- the building was demolished.

| | | I think I know what first got me into it. Back in 07 and 08 me and my dad went to an old abandoned tunnel deep in the Zelzeski forest. It was abandoned and decaying, and at that point it was 250 years old I think. I loved how it all looked and the feel of the place. Decay with a kind of history to me really gets me going on little expeditions to see what they look like now, and see where it all happened. The feeling of such things instead of sorrow gives me a kind of psychedelic-like happiness, which is kind of ODD. But if it makes me happy, it makes me happy. | | | 4chan photography board. Some dude was posting pictures of this gorgeous abandoned mental health facility in the UK, and I thought, "hmmm, yeah, that sounds like a good idea". Within a week I found and explored a closed down brick factory with a friend of mine. Haven't looked back since.
