How long ago was this? Nice shots. Dsomms and I had originally thought about going there back in February or so but decided not to...guess it was just the drive or we heard that it wasn't as great as it was meant to be. But idk!

I've been a few times this summer. The place is just ok, not spectacular.

From early spring, to now, scrappers have been hitting the place up again, tearing more of it apart. Been to all the building but one, because it was too overgrown with vegetation. Very close for me, only about 10 minutes away.

Mid summer, the ticks are REALLY bad. Early spring / fall should be better. I literally came out with about 12 of them on me one day.

This was in early May i believe. It was incredibly easy to get in but getting to the control area was a bitch. Had to walk though tall grass, thorns, and muddy water to go through a hole in the fence. Worth it though. I want to go back soon. I heard rumors of tunnels and ill spend all day there just to find them

I'm heading back soon too Lurch. If you wanna meetup sometime for a trip, let me know (PM). I have a buddy that wants to get out there this fall, as his Dad was stationed there back in the 1970's.

I agree, the building in the NE corner of the site are a bitch to get to. I did find some 4-wheeler trails that made it a little easier.

I think we ran into those too. It would be cool to meet up there. I just have to find another ride there. I use to live a few miles from there. Passed bu that place every single day and always saw the old towers. I had no idea what it was until i actually saw it again

I live only about 10 minutes from the place. I'm basically at I-75 / Exit 27.

There won't much in the way of tunnels at an ATLAS / NIKE base, the missiles were stored and fueled underground but I believe those were the pits that the EPA came through and filled in in the late 90's early 00's

They did do a massive cleanup, started around 96 if I remember correctly. Been a while since I dug through the research on the site. Most of the rumors I've heard about tunnels, were from a retired Navy guy I work with who said that there was most likely and underground bunker of some kind, somewhere on the site, so that those who manned the base would have a place to take shelter during an attack.

Most likely NO tunnels or underground bunker. Crew shelters at the launch sites were to protect crews from the blasts of a Nike launching or one that might explode due to a failure, etc. The missiles were stored in underground storage magazines not to protect them from blast-effects, but to minimize the size of the launch battery. BTW, maybe you or "the retired Navy guy" know this already, but D-57/58 was a WW-II era Naval Out Lying Field, an annex of NAS Grosse Isle.

Shelters to protect the crews at the site from fallout or blast effects from Soviets bombs didn't really exist, because the whole purpose of the Nike program was to keep the Soviets away from the air defense protection zone in the first place.

I've seen or heard of just a couple sites that *did* have an unusual underground structure that seemed to be a primitive & small fallout shelter, but from what I can tell, they were built with non-appropriated funds & don't show up on the original site layout plans.

I first started poking around D57/58 around the mid-1990s & need to scan those 35mm photos, but here's one of my favorite ones taken from the site:

1.

For those that might not know this already, the steel Diamond plates found at Nike launch sites were placed directly below where the Nike missile might launch from, so the force of the engine blast didn't damage the concrete & possibly send chunks of it back at the Nikes before they left the launcher.
