| | | I bet a lot of you have seen this place. Ice factory, built around the turn of the century, back when liquid ammonia was pumped into tubes that encircled molds for ice cubes that were about 18 by 12 inches wide and 6 feet long. The ammonia condensers were awesome but some fuckhead drove in with a frontloader and ripped them out a couple years ago. I could have tried to find some of my old pictures of them, but oh well.
The building was big enough to store ice, produce and meat for the home city and surrounding areas, as home refrigerators were uncommon until after WWII.
1. after a month of blue moons
2. better days came and went
3. but brick by brick we stand strong
4. even when the wheels fall off and burn
5. princesstree will survive
6. steel heart defeated
7. the ammonia drained out of the veins
8. Creosol-soaked cork insulated the walls
9. human bodies and steel; oxidation kills
10. plastic booties
11.
12. I moved the sticks, and the hinges were broken so I just lowered that heavy door down and walked into a big empty room. A few minutes later, a guy with a baseball bat was at the door wanting to know what I was doing! It turned out ok, but a tense minute for sure!

| | | I know where you're talking about. Went there awhile back with a much less impressive camera skill. Met the guy that set the boards on the door. He told us that was the 'cats room' that he kept locked up so the old door would fall and crush any cats, and to give the cats a safe place to hide.

Yeah, he turned out to be pretty nice- told me about the building, his cats, manifestations and old english.... But before that, when he had a baseball bat and was blocking my only known exit from the room- pretty scary, lol.

Nice pics. That looks like an interesting place.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

Yeah. Pretty tragic situation. I expect demolition is the most likely outcome for the building.

As is usually the case... Abandonments do not last long in this area. Factor in the social awareness of the murder and the knee-jerk reaction is to wipe it off the map. Exceptional cataloging of the site prior to its demise, though. Kudos.

From the road, it looks well-secured. Impressions are what matter, right?

| | | Titling threads is a huge challenge for me, and this title was pretty random, yet in hindsight very appropriate as an altercation between a disturbed (insane?) individual and a homeless man led to murder. Coupled with perennial complaining from the neighbors, the murder prodded the city to action. They'll leave the smokestack. On a happier note, I've discovered I really like doing night photography!
